Missing traditional RPG gameplay?

Am I the only one who misses the traditional turn-based style of RPGs, like Final Fantasy VII and VIII as well as The Legend of Dragoon? I miss taking my time and thinking about my actions. If I want to run around and beat shit up I'll go play God of War. I used to love Squaresoft but ever since Enix got its dirty paws on them I've pretty much hated everything they put out.

Now before I start receiving hate mail, know that this is only one mans opinion. I think game developers should start making games that cater to both crowds. What does everyone else think?

And here I was thinking the traditional turn-based style of the Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Wizardry games.

Otherwise, my backlog of games with such a system, not to mention my love of the Tales series, leads me to disagree with you.

I meant current/new games on current gen consoles, hence the "missing" part. I know there are older games out there. The only recent one I can think of is Lost Odyssey, and I couldn't stand the story. But do let me know of any others.

I'm enjoying Paper Mario: TTYD right now. It might only barely count but it's kick-butt on so many levels.

I miss it quite a lot, on occasion. I'm playing through FFXIII right now, and though I enjoy using the Paradigm system, I'll occasionally have that infamous, nagging thought that's been on just about every fan's mind since the release of FFXII; "I sure wish this game was turn-based."

I've got my DS copy of FFIV for my "turn-based with modern tune-ups" fix, but it sure would be nice to see a flagship title go back to the old ways, just for one game.

And hey, don't go badmouthing Enix, it isn't their fault. Dragon Quest stuck to the formula long after Final Fantasy started to diverge.

I do usually like the traditional turn based system better than whatever new system they come out with, but you have to give RPG makers some credit for trying something new. Unlike Call of Duty which just keeps spitting out the same exact game.

I sure was missing the RPG gameplay in Mass Effect 2.

And yes, I do miss turn-based gameplay in JRPGs.

Umm...am I the only one here who's played Persona for the PsP, Persona 3 and 4? They're all turn based, and relatively recent. I know that they're not for the "current gen" consoles, but that doesn't really mean much when compared to timing. Look at a lot of Atlus USA's recent works to find some gems of turn based RPGs.

You're kidding. Persona, Fire Emblem, Poke'Mon, shit, even KOTOR has a nice fusion, kind of like the old ATB system that FFIV had.

To me traditional RPG is me spending hours drawing dungeons on hex paper and deciding what voices to use for my npc's. It was fun way back when but I don't really miss it all that much.

I only enjoy Action-RPGs that essentially play like Third/First person action games but with a creamy RPG center <3 so no turn-based or DnD-style combat for me, thanks.

Not sure if this qualifies but you have to plan your entire turn ahead of time in Dragon Quest VIII but that's the closest thing I can think of.

I love the fact that games lately have been tearing down genre constrictions. I keep on saying it, but games are not made to fulfill genre definitions - definitions which have almost no consensus anyway.

That said, the only turn-based style combat I can tolerate is the Kotor style. Many people don't even realize it is turn-based. When enemies in a fight are just taking turns (like "ok I hit you, now you can hit me", it just looks ridiculous. Not for me. But if you're down with it, I'm cool.

Yes, I do miss traditional turn-based RPG gameplay. I could go on and on about why, but it basically boils down to 'it feels right'.

It's simply a matter of difference. A lot of people hate the kind of RPG you're talking about out of some sort of misguided, ignorant ethno-centrism, preferring western RPGs and claiming them to be the only "true" RPGs. Apparently unless you give the player full control of the story, it's not really an RPG. *shrugs* Not to say everyone who dislikes JRPGs is like that, but most of the reasons I've been given by JRPG haters are crap. Point being, those kinds of RPGs are awesome. Final Fantasy XIII still has a good amount of those elements: I recommend checking it out.

I enjoy real time battle and turn based and think that there ought to be room for both, turn based battles are great when they make you think strategically, a very simple example being Pokemon ''Oooh, a rock pokemon, better get out my water pokemon'', as I say a very simple example of what can be a very strategic battle engine.
I also enjoy both W and J RPG's and really don't get why it even has to be an issue within the RPG genre as a whole!
