I have to admit that I have never seen a single episode. It's made by the same woman who made Powerpuff girls right? Anyway, I'm curious about the appeal but not enough to actually watch an episode.

Well personally I really like the characters. Especially Rarity.

Shes an archtype we see in slice of life shows. But not usually outside of the antagonist role. Shes the fashion obsessed rich girl, or wanna be rich girl. But what sets Rarity apart is that shes a creator and business owner. She isn't just obsessed with fashion because, its her passion that she turned into a career. Plus shes very quick witted, in an early episode she is kidnapped by diamond dogs and put to work in their mines. It doesn't take long for her to figure out a weakness and exploit the hell out of it to the point of not only being able to get out on her own but get most of their gems too. Anyway, here is a song that pretty much tells you what you need to know about Rarity.

Really when I first saw her I was intrigued enough by her character to keep watching the series to see more of her. Eventually I ended up really getting into the show. It took my friend wanting to watch it during a drinking night for me to finally check it out.

I still don't understand this franchise, and I don't think this season will help.
It, like all fandoms, varies from person to person as to why they watch it. Some like the kind morals, some the stories, some the characters, the jokes, the writing, etc...
I'll jump in, and explain why, at least for me:

-Morals: Now, the morals are things that I, as an adult, don't need explained to me. Yet, critiquing their method of delivery, I think they're well done - I'd have no problem letting children of my own (if I had them) listen to them. Good morals that don't feel preachy in their delivery.

-Characters: While the show isn't without weak links (cough*Starlight*cough), taking a look at the Mane 6 in particular, they're all perfectly likable and dynamic. True, every main character is an archtype when you get down to it, but they're still archtypes with layers, character flaws, and to an extent, character development (Fluttershy's a bit more assertive, Rainbow Dash is less brash, Twilight less socially awkward, etc.) Over the last six seasons, while every one of the Mane 6 has remained in their archtype, they have developed to various extents. And we've got good characters outside them as well (Trixie, Discord, Celestia, Luna, etc.)

-Music: The songs are great. There's a few duds, but all in all, they're very well composed and fun to listen to.

-Writing: There's a few times, especially in season 1, where the writing does get a bit simple, and clearly designed for children, but for the most part, the writing is engaging enough for me as an adult. Basically family-level - no swearing or anything, but it's not patronizing or anything.

-Worldbuilding: Very minor, but Equestria does feel like a genuine setting. Not nearly as fleshed out as other cartoons (e.g. Avatar), but credit where credit is due.

-The "Fun Factor": I'd say this is the main factor for me. As an adult with various shifts and housework, and who hasn't sat down for 'Saturday morning cartoons' in nearly two decades, there's still a need of sorts for this kind of entertainment for me. 20 minutes of undemanding, yet still entertaining animation, that I can enjoy mostly unironically. There's certainly better cartoons out there, but I can enjoy MLP for what it is - children's entertainment that manages to be well written and engaging enough that I can enjoy it as an adult.

So, pretty good pair of episodes. Some random thoughts:

-I like that the changelings at least need some friendship concepts taught to them. Even by the show's standards, I found it an incredible stretch that an entire race would just stop being evil over the course of a single episode.

-Huh, whadya know. Starlight is starting to feel like her own character with her own dynamic with Trixie - not part of the Mane 6, but still linked to them.

-Trixie's still awesome

-Yes, I laughed at how singing the song cost them the record.

-Celestia's ruminations on Twilight...god damn it, I was hoping that, before the name drop, she just might have been referring to Sunset Shimmer. Sigh... :(

So, pretty good start.
