so far we have MAG with 128 Vs 128 but it may aswell be a 16 vs 16 because you only fight certain squads

what i propose is simply a battlefieldesque game on a massive map (similar to op flashpoint 2) each team has like 500 players with alot of vehicles. helicopters, jets, transport, tanks, jeeps etc. massive battles would last for hours and team work would be vital for example transport vehicles can be used as spawns while other vehicles protect them.

i think that devs should have the infrastructure, if WoW can support this many players why not an FPS?

Anything that requires precision doesn't seem real practical across a highly fluctuating network.

Planetside, look it up. It's everything you just described and it came out in 2003.

As for why more MMO companies don't follow in Planetsides footsteps? Well, probably because while it certainly did well and continues to have a devoted fan base, the game never really took off the same way so many other generic 3rd person fantasy MMO have.

Well not only does it have to compete with the massive slob monsters that is call of duty and WoW it also has to create a sense of balence and good shooting mechanics, better than your average shooter and convert them into an MMO play style.

I think hellgate london was one, but something happend to the servers.
They shutdown sadily, though I don't know if I would consider HG:L an MMOFPS.

ummmm Tabula Rasa?

The problem with them is they require such immense effort compared to the typical WoW clones.

Because of this, they are generally rushed, and when released they generally plummet to the depths of debt. Because of this, studios dont make them.

Its basically that simple

Look at WoW, with all of the servers it has. I'm sure people who have played it know what I'm talking about when I say there is lag sometimes.
Combine that lag with the precision required to do good in an FPS, and you have a losing combination.
Not to mention that the amount of weapon balance and customization required would take forever to make, and implement effectively.

Because trying to do all that with current gen graphics and such would be a collosal money sink and most publishers would laugh it out of any boardroom.

7-8 years on we have better technology and FPS is now more popular than fantasy RPG

companies like DICE have the funding and experience to make something like this work and be popular

FireFall, it is not an MMO but it also kind of is. Huge maps with lots of players doing their stuff.

Blizzard's new MMO is rumored to be either an FPS or third person shooter. Same with 40K: Dark Millenium

Please name me the MMO DICE have created...

What's that, there isn't one? So what makes you think they'd be able to make one - in fact look at how bad [and laggy] Battlefield Heroes was... You can't just get any old FPS developer and expect them to make an amazing MMO, game development just doesn't work like that. DICE make great, balanced, big team affairs for a set amount of people. An MMO FPS would be a completely different style of game.
Not to mention a really bad idea, most people play MMO's continually for a sense of progression, both through solo and group play - what could you add into than kind of MMO team-based shooters aren't already doing on the current market?

There're MMO shooters on the market; Global Agenda being a TPS MMO - it's not very good, but that niche has been covered...

Looks interesting but I doubt it's a true MMO, making it F2P with the kind of servers needed would be insanely costly...

@D_987

you say, what would MMO add to FPS, by MMO i dont mean a persistent open world (that just wouldnt work with the genre) all i mean is simply MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE. who would want to be in such a massive battle on that scale

FPS games with any depth are few and far between ... that'd be the truth, and hardly trolling.

Something that bugs me is people who don't understand the economics involved with F2P games. Red5 (the team working on Firefall) are funded by some company in China (don't recall the companies name). They actually realize how viable F2P games are, since China is full of very successful F2P games, because despite being "free", they make a ton of money.

Alternative to Firefall is Blizzard's new MMO (rumored to be FPS), Undead Labs new Zombie Shooter MMO (console exclusive), Planetside which is old but amazing, Planetside Next (the sequel recently announced) and also some third person games such as APB Reloaded and Global Agenda.

For every successful F2P MMO there're 10 that make a loss, of that I'm certain. I know there're successful F2P MMO's, but I doubt the vast majority are. Besides, if you'd read the post, instead of just blindly assuming my comment meant I knew nothing about such matters you'd see the point I'm ultimately making. An MMO FPS has to have a solid frame-rate, it's pretty much essential. If you have say 200 players per server [a very small MMO then - some may argue not actually an MMO] all playing a server intensive game like an FPS, with the huge numbers of players an F2P model is likely to gain it doesn't seem financially viable for any company to take this route.[/quote]

Global Agenda goes someway to being this, but is highly instanced untill the late game content.

Air Rivals is this, but in jets.

Also, it is being done, and to some extent has been - it's not a new question, it's just that the solution is difficult.
