you say, what would MMO add to FPS, by MMO i dont mean a persistent open world (that just wouldnt work with the genre) all i mean is simply MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE. who would want to be in such a massive battle on that scale
First and foremost, use the quote button - it's there for a reason [so I get alerted to the fact you've replied to my post].

Secondarily, define "Massively multi-player online" by a shooters standards. Then it becomes subjective, what is massive in those terms? Regardless a persistent, open world is part of the MMO experience nowadays - what's the difference between this concept and Call of Duty beyond the higher player-base?

Planetside, look it up. It's everything you just described and it came out in 2003.

As for why more MMO companies don't follow in Planetsides footsteps? Well, probably because while it certainly did well and continues to have a devoted fan base, the game never really took off the same way so many other generic 3rd person fantasy MMO have.
its rumored that sony has a new planetside in the works

Wasn't WWII Online an attempt at a FPS MMO?

Anyway, I get what you're saying. Something like Battlefield 2 on a MUCH MUCH larger scale, but I really don't think it would work. There's a few dozen reasons floating around in my head right now, but for some reason none want to actually form into words.

There is a mod for Battlefield 2 that allows you to change the number of bots to whatever you want. You can play with somewhere around 250 bots. Just look up Battlefield 2 bot changer on google.

Are you freaking kidding me?
Go look up planetside. It came out in 2003 and it's the only damn thing of it's kind. Until the next one comes out hopefully soon.

One reason there isn't much to be seen of the genre is that in general MMOs need to do a great deal of server-side processing, and this causes a fair amount of lag that, while not too disruptive to a game like WoW, could make an FPS unplayable.

Some of those games sound like they might be good, but I prefer to keep it simple. Online servers in Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament, etc. make it so you can just jump in and play with a fairly large group of people. Borderlands has an awesome loot system so even though its multiplayer capability is limited, it feels like a more private MMO such as GuildWars.

Anything that requires precision doesn't seem real practical across a highly fluctuating network.
TF2 and some other source games have net code that makes the game very even for anyone with under 250ms ping. You might have a hard time playing from across the continent, but you're not supposed to do that to begin with. Sadly, I'll be left out since I'm not in the US (which is where the game will most likely be released), but I just gotta take it like a man.
