I'm currently playing and enjoying LotRO.

It's F2P, and the F2P content can get you to mid 30's (out of 75). And, as you play that content, you'll earn Turbine Points, which can be used to purchase additional content w/o having to spend cash.

Probably, the thing I like about it the most is just about every class can solo till end game content. Sure, grouping makes things easier, and is required for some instances, but it's not something you have to do to level up. Of course, some classes will find soloing easier than others.

I've totally lost track of what makes a good MMO anymore. x3 Since you say "MMO" and not "MMORPG" I'll list a couple that aren't exactly RPGs

I've been messing around with the ones on steam and Forsaken World was a fun little romp for me. The vampire class was interesting.

Spiral Knights is another good one, Sega seems pretty good at getting out games that are really fun yet I almost never hear about them before randomly discovering them and playing them. Anyway, Spiral Knights plays out like Legend of Zelda and the Four Swords. At least that's what it reminded me of, except it's an MMO and the art styles are different. :3

Black Prophecy. Slightly weird title I suppose. If you're looking for a space flight simulator that is FREAKING GORGEOUS, like RIDICULOUS LEVELS OF GORGEOUSNESS and has damn good combat that isn't like a MMORPG (as in you actually fly around and shoot at stuff in real-time umm like Star Fox in one of the open world levels, not the linear hallway levels) I didn't get to play it too much because I haven't had the time, but seriously if you even slightly like the idea of flying around in space and shooting people down, this is a really fun game. Oh, I can't speak about the level/skills system though do to my lack of play time. :D I'll even put the link. x3

I hope people check this game out, just cause of how amazing the visuals are. Oh and the best part is it's a FREE TO PLAY MMO.

Oh God, I think I just nerded all over the floor. I do apologize.
Ahaha, just to let you know I only decided to throw Black Prophecy in on a whime and then half-way through writing a description I got way too excited about it in remembering how fun it was. xD
Check the game out! RAWR. x3 I'm insane. ._.

Here is a list of MMOs, with actual gameplay vids and screens, links, etc.

Sort the list by RANK to see what is popular.

EDIT:
Black Prophecy is sorry I can't play their game at my location...

My suggestion is to get Star Wars: The Old Republic now until Guild Wars 2 comes out later this year and get that. No other MMORPG will have PvP as good as GW2. (link [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXc1JwHGNik&feature=player_detailpage#t=105s])

Spiral Knights is alright but the energy system really killed the game for me. I'd like to recommend Guild Wars 1 but since 2 is coming out soon you probably won't get much use out of it and would be better off waiting for the second one.

Well both World of Tanks and APB: Reloaded are free MMO's. They may not be the best out there, but they have offered my friends and me decent entertainment, and you lose nothing by trying them =).

www.worldoftanks.eu / www.worldoftanks.com

APB: Reloaded is easiest downloaded with Steam, though you could always visit

http://www.gamersfirst.com/ Which also holds a bunch of other free MMOs along with APB

---

I highly recommend Fallen Earth, very good post-apocalyptic MMO that recently went free-to-play after changing owner (same as APB, btw =3). I've played 169 hours on that so far, and I'm still having decent fun.

I've really enjoyed Rift, however if you're looking for F2P then Runes of Magic is pretty fun and isn't one of those that pretty much forces you to pay for stuff.

for a F2P one, try Rusty Hearts. It's an interesting little hack'n'slash MMO RPG type thing. You can get it off steam and it's definitely worth at least a look!

Fallen Earth or Lord of the Rings Online.

Both games feed my love of exploration in MMOs and are extremely atmospheric. FE has FPS style combat which makes a refreshing change and a deep crafting system where you make the best gear, rather than getting it in drops.

As for LOTRO, if you enjoyed the Peter Jackson films you'll likely enjoy this. If you enjoyed the original books then you'll likely love this.

And they're both free, with very generous F2P models that will not leave you feeling forced to pay up, though you may well want to, so you've literally nothing to lose by trying them.

Njeeeh idunno bout' that. It was great stuff untill lvl 50 to 55 -ish. Than the garden variety mobs suddenly get a huge boost which is clearly the producer's subtle way of telling you it's time to start buying gear upgrades. It's not impossible without the cash upgrades but killing even one mob takes forever and you'll die often. And curiously, it's around the same level the xp penalty for dying suddenly goes up exponentially. 6 to 9 hours at the library is normal.
Than there's also the mount thing. You can only get 'em through the cash shop and they cost like 10 bucks.
Also, don't even think about pvp unless you have truckloads of cash shop gear upgrades.

In their defence, there used to be a system for buying cash shop items with in-game money but it was insanely expensive and at some point it got shut down because chinese goldfarmers were abusing it somehow. I don't know if it ever came back.

OT: so yeah runes of magic is still one of the better F2P choices, even though it's got a bad case of selling power. It's pretty shamelessly copying wow so it has many of the same good features plus some wow SHOULD have, like player houses. But remember that if you want to do anything besides run of the mill go-kill-8-goblins quests, it's cashtime.

Other than that: don't touch korean MMO's with a ten foot pole. Just... don't.
