Don't forget about Lord of the Rings: Online. Its the only MMO that kept me entertained longer than a month. Not only that but it has a great, friendly, and very helpful community.

I've been thinking about getting an MMO (or at least trying a free trial). The problem is which one? There are so many and I don't know which one has what qualities. So which do you think I should try?
Id say you should go for wow - I was playing it for two years before noticing I was addicted and stopping.

Its very fun, but just BE CAREFUL not to get addicted. lots of people are sucked in...Other than that its great. And be a druid...they can turn into shit. It rocks.

Lord of the Rings online is a very good choice. Best community in any mmo I have played and a really good storyline. Tons of depth and a good world to explore. I would try Eve, DDO, and WoW as well.

Alex P: To answer all your questions: Competiton is not very important. I like a game with a bit of challenge but not imposiible. I prefer concentrating on making my guy more powerful and I don't really care how he looks. If I wanted a social experience I'd go to a chet room. So social experience doesn't matter. I like a game where you can be hardcore when you feel and casual when you tired or lazy. So is there any game that caters to my preferences?
WoW might fit the bill. (It's not a game I actually like; but I think you might like it.)

Overall, I'd say competition isn't a big thing in WoW. There are PvP areas but it doesn't really compare to, say, GW. (Also, you can choose the kind of server you're on to control the level of PvP conflict.)

WoW can be fairly challenging or rather easy, depending on which area you're doing.

WoW's pretty good for powering up your guy -- there are lots of levels to pick up and items to collect. (And some of the equipment looks rather tacky, so not minding the appearances too much can be a plus.) WoW characters get lots of new abilities as they power up, kinda like the skill trees in Diablo 2; there's definitely room for strategy in picking out your guy's abilities, which sounds like something that you might like.

The game's generally designed for long-haul play; leveling up and finding better stuff will keep you busy for months, potentially. The world is also pretty large and varied as far as MMOG settings go.

The game has some pretty robust systems for stuff like trading items. You can buy and sell gear without having to stand around on some street corner talking to people to do it: just pop an item into the in-game "Auction House" and you'll find a buyer.

Getting the most out of higher-end WoW does kinda require having a good guild or group of friends. But, well, that's pretty much every MMOG.

No offence but Runescape sucks. I tried it. It is the most horrible looking game i've ever seen.
It proves more about you than it does about Runescape that you don't like it because of graphics.

Davey woo: Is Guild wars free or just cheap?
The attraction is no subscription fees. Once you buy the game, thats all you ever have to pay. No monthly fees or that.

However, that is cancelled out by the fact that it is a small, shitty and boring game.

No, it just proves hes smart. Runescape is quite an awful game. It was good in 2002, but gaming standards have really gotten better than that crap.

I would recommend World of Warcraft. Unless you play and love 3.5e Dungeons and Dragons, in which case I'd recommend at least trying Dungeons and Dragons Online.

I've played Runescape for over 6 years and I'd say it is much better than World of Warcraft.

Gaming standards have increased? Games are about fun. Have your "fun standards" increased? Are you saying older games are instantly bad?

Hold on a second, right there, slow down.

Most of those games, I agree with you, they are awesome,

EXCEPT. Eve. *Shudders* its boring, repetitive, (Even for a MMO), VERY confusing, and the controls pretty much suck. It does get a little better once you figure everything out, but it still pretty much sucks.

These are my opinions and I dont mean to start a flame war.

You know if money's tight you could always check out a private server for WoW, or near enough any MMORPG

I actually do agree with you, Eve was very confusing when i first tried it. So much so that i closed it and purged my system of it within minutes. However, I tried it again out of curiosity, and this time took the time to read everything the game was telling me. The new intro is very informative and helps everything not feel so daunting. I did not stick with it, but it is at least worth checking out the free trial.

WoW is the best. There is a lot of WoW-hate going around, but that hate isn't actually Wow-hate, it's MMORPG-hate. And WoW is the most popular MMORPG around..

No, im saying that almost Every MMO That came out after runescape was better.
I will admit, Runescape was kinda the real kick-start for MMORPGs, but it isnt good. The controls are poor, the graphics are poor (Not that it matters to me, but it does to some people. I still play the original DOOM *shrugs*) the camera is poor, the combat is poor, the trading system isnt that bad, but still too mediocre for my liking. Even the communications are poor. the lack of classes, and the addition of 'member only' zones rather fucks things up as well.

I dont find it fun, anyway.

Go for WoW if you want amazing PvE, Warhammer if you want PvP, Runes of Magic looks alright and is free, but haven't played it.
