I swear to god, that captcha thing is going to be the death of me.

I've trialed way too many MMOs. From WoW to Mabinogi, I've been through the notable online titles. Throughout the majority of them, I've found that the only way to make your way in these games is by completing quests, which eventually leads to PVP.

I have yet to find an actual MMO that feels like a resemblance of real life where you find a trade and make a living upon that. Most MMOs are based around combat (killing things until the quest says your done) and I find it rather monotonous.

Now, I used to be a regular on a mod for the space sim, Freelancer. For any of you who know about Freelancer Reunion, then you might know where I'm going with this. Freelancer Reunion let you be and do anything. You could be a trader, a miner, a bounty hunter, or a pirate and you could make a living that way. I played as an independent trader for most of the game and I had my share of adventures avoiding pirates, dealing with pirates and being killed by pirates. Eventually, I left the game because of all the damn pirates everywhere but a thought has clung to me ever since I left.

Are there MMOs or MMORPGs that are not based around questing? Playing through Reunion, I only took quests if I was really aching for cash. Normally, I would just pick up expensive trade goods from one end of the universe and plot a complicated course to the other end for a sweet payoff, which i could then spend on new guns, missiles and even put towards a better ship. For all of the wonderment of MMOs, its shocking how many of them are built around the formula of killing random numbers of monsters. Is there an alternative?

There's always eve, no leveling in that game, just money. You can make cash by killing [X] amount of spacerats or you can mine and sell your way up the ladder. Just remember, anyone who started playing after 2005 or whenever it came out, are just there to feed the long time players for the first 6 months or so of their careers.
Nevertheless, it's an interesting and unique twist on the MMO genre, and looking up some of the more epic Corp. Wars on youtube, it certainly makes for a good light show.

Second life? Its more of a realistic type MMO where you can sell things in real life, but it is still an MMO where you can choose to do anything at all.

I never actually tried Second Life, I heard a lot of crazies gather there. I'm sure it's just a stereotype but some of the stories I've heard are pretty bad. Though I must admit, Fort Longcat sounds like it was absolutely epic, when it still existed.

yes eve, in eve online you can make you way byt running a business, mining or pvp, people need mined resources to make ships and ship parts, and mercenaries an missioners pvp or pve to get money so they buy new ships, the economy is very nice ive always liked it.

it was also the site of an epic act of subterfuge that destroyed one of the largest busines/aliance in the game.

Okay, we (and my forgetfullness) have established that EVE is the foremost jumping off point for games that let you pursue any trade. What else is there?

Second life might be worth a look. Can you be a trader of shopkeer?
