I'll start!

- Minecraft and Mojang
- Team Fortress 2 and Valve/Other source games
- Stalker and GSC
- Oblivion and Bethesda

So, does anyone want to provide an explanation on why this is so?

Purpose: I want to see what everyone has to say about this.

I guess the best explanation comes on two fronts.
Firstly, that modding communities don't have a deadline for release, and most of the best examples are released many years after the game is already out.
Secondly, modding communities focus and work on one particular mod or element, or a certain piece to improve on. So instead of building and polishing a whole game their focus is on buffing one piece of a puzzle.

Not to say developers shouldn't take a few lessons from their modders.

I think some credit has to be given to the developers for making code that is A: Accessible at all and B:easy to mod with like source.

Total war has some amazing mods like Third age, Sins of a solar Empire also has loads of good mods and funny enough Garrys mod has amazing mods though that is a source game.

None really, at least in my view. If it where not for the devs then the modders couldn't mod.( That could be a song*nudge*MiracleOfSound*Nudge*) I'm not saying that modders are shit but I don't think any outshine the devs. If I was forced to choose one game then it would be morrowind. The amount of mods for that game are astounding.

I think the reason some modding communities completely outdo the original developers is because (for the most part) they aren't constrained by time, or money, or pushy marketers or indeed an overall style. They already have the basic tools in the form of the game files themselves for them to take in any direction they see fit, or to make fixes that the developers didn't have time to sort out, or to add something the developers cut from the game due to money/time constraints.

Also: Modding Genesis is a fantastic little community for a VERY easy-to-mod and very underrated game: Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis.

The fact the three UT2004 mods (Red Orchestra,Alien Swarm and Killing Floor) became actual games really says something about the quality of the games modding community.

Problem with two of those ones. I don't know about S.T.A.L.K.E.R/Minecraft, but the problem with saying the modding community was better than the developer about Team Fortress and Oblivion is that the original games were amazing. Half Life will always be a better game than TF/CS, and Oblivion was a wonderful game that didn't need mods. Sure the mods for both games were awesome, but they don't belong on this thread.
Out of TF2 and all of the Half-Life games, which do you think I'm still playing? You'd be dead wrong if you answered the latter.

Actually, you may be right on it not belonging in this thread amongst other things. As though TF2 does have quite a few mods, most of the focus I've seen comes from user submitted content (such as hats and weapon models) and map making. There's few outside elements that would really be considered mods, and most of those are merely new game modes such as Zombie Fortress.

Then again, if we simply consider modding to mean 'new content created by people who are not the original creators', then TF2 does have a vibrant community of modders.

For my submission, the fine community over at The Elder Scrolls/Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas Nexus. Quite frankly they've enhanced those games immensely, and yeah...they wouldn't be there if the game wasn't there first, but that doesn't mean they haven't made the games better or improved them vastly. Though, that doesn't necessarily make them 'better' than the devs.

Can't believe everyone forgot "Black Mesa". That's gonna put Valves attempt at "Half Life: Source" in the bin.

(You do need to make an account to download files, but all the mods are free of course.)

Black Mesa seems to be unfortunately edging closer to vaporware at this point. While there does seem to be some activity the BMS forums, they're moving very slowly. Depending on the size of their team, it's quite understandable, these are a bunch of modders doing it in their spare time, so we'll be waiting a while I think.

Tesnexus is full of mods. I probably get a new one each time I start Oblivion :D

I don't think the modding communities put developers to shame, exactly, but they do have less time and money restraints, or can do things that could not fit in the original game (a lot of hi-res textures etc, or higher res faces)

Going to have to put a vote in for the Total War Community. Why?
Two words.
Europa Barbarorum.
There are plenty of great mods for the various games in the series but that one is pretty special.

Also, Oblivion has plenty of great mods too.

how is 'nothing' to 'something' < 'something' to 'something+'?

when the modding community actually makes Oblivion, then i might agree with you...
mods are great, they add a lot, they do not however equate to the entire game.

The Mount and Blade series has an incredible amount of very good mods availiable. I've racked up more then 300 hours across those games thanks to mods.
