The annoying thing about the LHC is it's name. Hadron Collider I'm fine with, but "large"?
Hey! Try accidently mixing the R and the D when searching for Hadron in wikipedia. Boy was that awkward!
This is another kind of science... More linked to reproductive biology tan quantum particles, amirite ?

root> indeed we have a winrar here.

Anyways it's almost 3PM here (GMT+1), and nothing so far happened... These idiots are not even skilled enough to destroy the Earth*, which means I still have a report to turn on Oct 15...
That's it, I stop believing in science and I start believing in Lovecraftian Creation and the Elder Gods... Now if you'll excuse me, I must take a break to go worship Shub-Niggurath...

Great, I'm still alive. Means I can spend the day doing absolutely nothing instead of spending the day being dead. I feel so much fulfilled. Hurray!

So apparently it'll take 2 years for full results to be shown? And here I thought I would know today if we're actually a digital program made by someone who just wanted to check an equation.

But why do we have to wear these ridiculous ties? :)
Essentially, historically, for reasons of fashion. More recently as part of a formal dress code, which some businesses like .coms flout.

My Grandmother used to make silk ties by hand, my mother (who was a textile designer at Liberty's of London) designed some tie prints, I've only ever worn a Grammar school tie and as an open-source programmer I've got a very loose dress code, so I don't wear ties at all.

For answers to all your tie-related questions:

As to your post "If we don't discover the Higgs Boson can we assume God exists?" the nature of Scientific enquiry (Hypothesis, Theory, and prediction verified by Experiment...) means that any true failure to find 'H' will merely invalidate the Standard Model (a theory) forcing the scientific community to come up with another hypothesis, theory and set of practical experiments to test [i}that[/i], this is no bad thing and they will have weird experimental evidence to fit a theory around (i.e. 'explain that').

There is no reason for external factors (e.g. some sort of God) to leap into the instant explanation of any unexpected mystery there may be.

The best explanation of the LHC experiment is here:

There is so much evidence backing up that nothing bad will happen. I honestly don't know where to start.

I'd just like to point out that I'm still alive, even though the LCH was turned on at 9:28am GMT and it is now 1:39pm GMT...
Yes but are you really alive?

Ugh, I just want October to come and go so I can stop hearing people talking about how it's the end of the world and we're all going to die.

I can only imagine what 2012 is going to be like. *shudders*

I'm not saying you guys are constantly whining about it, it's other people that are causing my frustration.

well, I for one am with Hawking. the Damn thing isn't gonna work. and for the record, it's only because he's quantifiably the most brilliant man in history
quantifiable? really more than Da Vinci, Einstein or Newton

the guy behind the Higgs Boson disagrees

i wonder what happens when physicists fight?
i wonder if like this?

Not to sound like a particular troll, but Hawking frequently admits that he's only achieved such far sighted knowledge by standing on the shoulder's of giants like Newton Einstein, Galileo, Kepler and Copernicus. In fact he edited several biographys with his own commentary added, about those 5 men entitled "On The Shoulders of Giants".

Throughly I'm pleased that theres a thread that stops fools in their tracks thinking that the LHC is a death machine or some kind of $cientology regime to kill Stephen Hawking.
Anyways, a wise man once said 'It's the Journey, not the destination that matters.' The most important thing is the technology we will create in this pursuit to continue it, more than the direct purpose.

Also, nice pic Capt_Jack_Doicy.

I agree with Anarchemitis, this could be a $cientology plot to kill Stephen Hawking!
In all seriousness though, I'm pretty excited as to what we'll find. Anybody hope they will find the Higgs or do you want physics to be shaken up a bit?
