While we're talking about good cartoons, any of you seen Bee and Puppycat? It was created by the character designer and storyboard artist for Adventure Time.
My god yes!
I really hope they turn this one in to a series. "Bo-Gow"

Another good one that's coming out is from Rebecca Sugar, storyboarder and songwriter for Adventure Time.
It's called Steven Universe for those whose interested and you can find the pilot episode online so check it out.

Personally I love it. After I first saw it I watched it at least once a day for a week.
Totally awesome show.

I genuinely honestly completely know a girl from Uni who is basically Bee.

Batman The Animated Series has been mentioned a few times, which made me realize something: everything about the show was treated like it was a live-action movie. The music, the lighting, the cinematography, the writing and acting, everything. They didn't go "oh, we're making a cartoon, so it needs to be done like this", they approached it with the same sort of seriousness as you would something live-action.

I can only think of a small handful of American animations that take this approach, even less if we're talking about ones aimed at a young audience.

Cartoons are doing just fine right now.

The thing is, when people think of cartoons from the 80's, 90's, and even the early 00's, they tend to lean towards remembering the good stuff. And the highs of these periods are VERY high.

But lest we forget how wretchedly low the lows were, as well. There were PLENTY of cartoons from our youth that were nothing less than garbage. It's just that most of us don't remember them, or remember them through rose-tinted nostalgia goggles.

You want examples? Look no further than MovieBob's Big Picture episode on video game cartoons. And that's just one aspect of how bad cartoons used to be.

So when people say that new cartoons suck, and old ones are better, I can just point to Captain Planet and go, "Really?".

(PS, I am not saying all old cartoons were bad, by any means. I'm just saying that it's important not to judge an entire generation of cartoons based on solely the good stuff)
So you know they talk about the very highs in those periods when they say it was better back then, but you challenge them by bringing up poorer cartoons?

Look mate, I'm one of those people who prefer older... well just about everything. I don't like most of these examples everyone has brought up in this thread. It's really difficult to explain because it's a fine line thing and I'm just not up to it right now.

I'll just say with Gravity Falls I don't like it's humour at all. A lot of it I don't even consider humour, they sometimes act strange for the sake of it, and I find the over-reactions really annoying as they are either poorly timed or delivered, or both. This is similar with many of these others shows as well, and I can't watch it normally, just tolerate it.

There were many many other cartoons in the 80s and 90s that hardly get brought up at all. I'll have to look for them again for you lot. I remember seeing A LOT of both kid and adult cartoons back then, including some of that weird stuff from Japan.

Bah those two are nothing compared to the ending of legend of Korra. I would post the video, but sadly I don't know how to.
OT: Honestly very few of those 90's shows have aged well and i find my slef enjoying the more modern cartoons more thna I did a lot of the older ones.
It's quite simple. Combine "youtube=", add the end of the youtube URL, such as "1WyCrD_xGsA" and add in brackets in the very beginning and end and you get:

I honestly find myself enjoying cartoons more as an adult now than I did as a child- Usually, I'd watch enough of a show to get the concept, then go playing with that as a basis for some ideas, when not in my own fantasy land. (being seven with pokemon in your brain was a truly epic time)

As I've grown in desire to want to produce childrens' media, I've been looking a lot at shows to better understand teaching values, presenting stories, and the likes in order to synthesize my own ideas in a way that it palatable to my audience.

Curiously, though, I've actually grown a fondness for a lot of fairly old animated shows; I enjoyed Rocky and Bullwinkle more in college than I ever did as a child, and slapstick means more to me now than it ever did to me as a kid. If you're enjoying a lot of the good contemporary animation around, I'd suggest going back and watching classic shows with an open mind.
