Modern gaming... is this decline actually a real decline in quality? or are we fooled by nostalgia?

I don't think that applies to me as probably about 90% of my favourite games are on the 360
Play older games! You havn't lived enough!

Anyway. I don't feel that quality is declining as much as people like to say it is.
I did play old games but i think new games are better than the majority of old games with some exceptions
What games did you play man?
my favorite old games were:
-all 3 Jak and dextar games
-every zelda game
-space station silicon valley
-super smash bros melee
-original spyro's
-first 3 Crash Bandicoot
-Worms world party
-mario 64

their were a lot off good games but i don't think their as good as oblivion, fallout 3 or bioshock personally
I could suggest so many.... Did you not play the origional Half-Life?
No
Holy crap man! You are missing out! Its pretty damn fun!

I've noticed a lot of threads with some comments saying that modern games aren't as good as classics, that we'll never again see the quality of such classics as Final Fantasy VII, Ocarina of Time, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Half-Life 1, and some lesser known titles such as System Shock 2.

Are comments like these valid, or are many gamers simply clouded by nostalgia?
what is it about zelda that is so good?? i downloaded one of the games (cant remember which) and played one on my sisters DS, and neither were that good.
as for sonic, it was fun but repetitive, final fantasy, never played, and i haven't played HL1 but i've played half life 2, and it was good, but nothing revolutionary.
i think games are getting better and better as time goes on.
(except castlevania: symphony of the night which i play on psp and loooooove)
I was just using those games as examples as I know they're rather popular to try to put my point across in the original post.

I dont think it's nostalgia. I have went back to snes, n64 and ps1 games and loved them to bits. I think the problem is devs these days are focusing too much on the appearance of a game and most new ideas have been done.

Not sure, some games today are a compete and utter failure. Other's do very well in their genre and i think DAO is gonna do just that for the RPG genre.

Let me preface this by saying Im not a fanboy and you Wii lovers are going to crucify me for saying this but....

The ongoing rise of "casual" gamers and "family" oriented games is killing gaming. Reason why old games were really good? because game companies had to make AMAZING games to get us sucked in, now they dont. Gaming is more and more main stream, which means the money to spend on games is spread far more thin they it used to be. Developers are spending half the budget on stupid shit games like hello kitty island adventure and half on the new ff12 because right now, the cool thing is to get grandma and your 8 year old sister playing games. If they make a shit FF12 game and a good hello kitty island adventure that gets 1,000 more NEW customers they have achieved thier goal, which is making more money. Old school gamers aren't going to stop buying games because htey put out a few shit titles. It's like cigarettes, we're hooked already, we are no longer the ones they are trying to keep happy or impress. They get our money anyways. It's these "casual" gamers that buy shit like Wii fit and wii sports that game devs want to target cause they are new money. Until this trend slows down we may likely be doomed to seeing very few exceptional games and alot of eh, it was ok games.
