It goes in roughly 10 years cycles. Dance-based mainstream music then rock-based mainstream music. Live a little longer and you'll see the cycle repeat itself. Disco -> 'Classic' Rock, -> 80's Dance -> Grunge -> House -> the cycle goes on...

What gets radioplay is in no way related to whats popular or even what sells, it's simply what record companies at large feel needs promoting at the time...Not that's there's anything wrong with that, I'm not one of those punk "I hate all major record labell" guys, I just recignize that the industry is run by money, cheapest performance+exploitable stars=easy money. There are some genres that are more heavily, I suppose exploited is the best word I can think of, that are used more than others, but that's simply because it's far easier to find a dumbass black guy you can mold into a rapper(regardless of talent, some of the guys getting constant airtime are not complete shit) than it is find a solid rockband who can be paid very little and draw publicity.

Modern Music! sucks basicly because teenage girls and gay dudes only want one thing sensitive guy who have fag hair not caring about their music 98% of music today is cachy melodys and funky beats (i guess) BACK IN THE DAY it was all about the music not the hair (some exceptions), the teenage girls or the gay dudes its was plain about the music you never saw The Beatles making songs with 3 sentances repeated OVER AND OVER until your ears bleed shit!

Have you ever been on a forum or Facebook(if you use it) and see a post along the lines of "OmG watchin movie with BFF Steph, TTC<3<3<3<3"? That, right there, is what has happenned to modern music.

I made a joke about this based on my friends redundant grammar(Finished with, "That's right, I can criticize grammar and mainstream media at the same time). Not a single person got it. This led me to rant about shitty "Oh my god, girl, why u hatin meh? I still luv you, yes I do" music. Granted, it was over Facebook, and sarcasm doesn't convey well over the internet, but still. I feel your pain. But it never does much good to complain, just ignore that shit and listen to stuff you like. If you're into unknowns, I might suggest Terry Eason, he's a good underground alt artist. He's called pop, but his style can reach all over the place. His first album is on iTunes, "Sentimental Vanity."

EDIT: Totally forgot the rest.
But yeah. The chorus is one sentence over and over. So yeah, you kind of fail.

BERETHOND hey its The Beatles they could do anything they wanted and...Thats only the chorus not the whole song like modern music that is one a couple of sentances over and over to different beats so you kind of fail and plus The Beatles were making there music in the 60s and 70s modern music is made like 40 years later so the music should be more advanced not being lazy repeating the same lyrics for most of the songs OK

I liked it when Public Enemy made It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, and made it a special point to shit on radio (specifically black radio) for not having the balls to play Public Enemy during daylight hours.

Okay, I know we're living in messed up times right now, but what's up with music? Have you noticed how we have moved away from some genres only to replace them with dance, rap, pop, or any mix of them? What happened to good music? Modern music doesn't have that "feel" when I listen to it. The moment any Lady Gaga or Jonas brothers or any form of rap comes onto the radio, I immediately switch to another station. Older music, like Led Zepplin, or even some '90s music comes on, I turn up the volume. What happened?
I think you need to not generalise the music so much. By modern music do you mean popular music because this link is to a modern band who are not cliché at all. http://www.karnivool.com.au/
