Call of Duty 4 was a great game for single and multi-player.
No. On the single player front, I would entertain an argument. On the multiplayer front, it was a complete gong show. If there's one thing I NEVER want to see in my multiplayer FPS experience, it's MMORPG style grinding.

Most importantly, COD4 knew what it wanted to be: A realistic fps with a plot that was feasible and gameplay mechanics that weren't completely absurd. (Except for noob-tubes).
>Realistic.

Then Infinity Ward tried to capitalize on the shocking parts of COD4 by making MW2 nothing but shocking moments, epic set pieces in the levels, and unrealistic epic shootouts. My point is that unlike COD4, MW2 didn't know what it wanted to be. Some parts it was realistic, but other places I wouldn't have been surprised if my next mission would be in a secret military base on Neptune.
How exactly would one build a military base on a planet that is made entirely of gas?

The whole campaign was basically a Michael Bay film: Lots of plot holes that you aren't supposed to question because you should be watching things blow up.
And the first one wasn't? Well, MW1 was more of a marriage between Tom Clancy style subtlety (anything involving the Brits) and Michael Bay inspired black-and-white conquest.

MW2 was one of the best selling games of all time.
And here's where I can shift the blame AWAY from IW and Activision. Sure, they might have been responsible for this crap, but what's worse is that people bought it anyway. Oh, the things a $200 million ad campaign can do for you.

So now developers are more concerned about making a MW2 clone that sells well instead of making a game with a something unique that separates itself from the rest of the pack. Bungie and the Dice team have made a few major steps with BC2 and Halo Reach. Remember how one of yahtzee's things is: "Like God of War but..." or "Like GTA but...". Now almost every game falls under "Just like the MW2 campaign except...".
As long as a game includes mapmaking tools, I'm cool as a cucumber. LONG LIVE THE PC MASTER RACE! TF2 FOREVER!

Kind of. You're describing MW1 as a kind of godsend while condemning MW2 as a fall from grace. I see it differently. I saw MW1 as a shooter that presented a few good ideas (certain narrative elements) lost in a sea of general stupidity, one that would grow into an ocean of insanity with MW2.
