That's... That's... That's horrible!

Not because it's Call of Duty. Not because it's the best selling game ever. Not because it's Activision. And not because Bobby Kotick is made of pure, monetized evil.

It's because there will be more and more games now than ever that will try to jump on this success bandwagon and fail. Or succeed, but not as much. It's a waste of money, talent, resources, creativity and time.
Instead of forwarding the industry, the gamers themselves will just drive it into stagnation. And Call of Duty itself will be stagnating pretty soon. Ten years from now people will be staring at the emptiness of the Call of Duty servers (or lobbies) and wondering what the hell they spent their money on, while looking at the next third installment of the then current multiplayer craze that they're going to spend $70 bucks on, repeating the endless cycle of massive publisher copy-paste-bugfix-new map bullshit.
(Do mind that I'm not a clairvoyant, but this is merely how I see it impacting the industry)

Not to mention that many actually good and creative designers with innovation and vision are losing money because of it.

I do not hate CoD, it just got boring at MW2, but from my experience with being in retail, we sold all of our copies of Skyrim, we still have 100+ copies of MW3, we got the same amount of both games shipped to our store. Either the area I live in is full of people who don't like CoD that much or there is something off.

Amazing how mediocrity is so gratuitously rewarded in the gaming community.
Id like to see this as an genius plot developed by the top 100 game companies as a solution to improving its fanbase and thus the multiplayer experience. The idea is simple, Collect all the QQ 3 year olds with microphones in an isolation camp of a community and make the game itself so poor that sane people find other games more interesting.

Perhaps now everyone will have to admit that CoD, while not exactly original, is actually fun and worth playing.

The sheer amount of bandwagon hoppers astounds me.

The games are by no means the pinnacle of gaming, but here's a newsflash: they are actually GOOD GAMES! And good games tend to sell a lot, because, and I know this may sound weird, people have fun playing them!

This does not in any way stop you from enjoying your own favorite games, so by all means, ignore it, and move on. I am in no way a hardcore CoD fan, but I must say that at this point, the unjustified bitching wears thin.

You are the 100th billionth person to make up an excuse because other people like the game you don't like.
*celebrates on being #100 billion* Okay, I probably should have elaborated. I don't think it's a bad game at all. It is pretty entertaining. Problem for me, is that it's not that good. And I do admit I am a bit tired of the game though. Same old, same old since CoD2 in 2005.

Very well ,young lads
Tell me the development costs of MW3( which i firmly believe was nothing else than reskinning existing models and throw in some random 2-3 h campaign as well as put in some maps that could have been the 15 bucks map packs for MW2)
Call it a map pack if you wish. Given the number of maps included, it then becomes the cheapest map pack that's ever been released for a CoD title.

Does anyone know where to find sales figures in terms of number of units sold? Grossing more money doesn't necessarily mean more copies of the game out there. You'd only have to make it $5-10 more to earn a still greater shit-ton of cash per instalment.

The game's damn fun. That's all that matters. Haters gonna hate.

Good for them. With all the cash they're raking in, maybe they'll finally be able to put forth the capital to make a game that isn't just a generic shooter. I don't know what type of game, but just something else.

Now use that money to make a COD set during WW2 from the Axis point of view!
Considering how Infinity Ward and Treyarch have been constantly trying to outdo the shocks from their last game, that's actually possible.

I would love that game.

The indie supporter in me is filled with intense pain. IMMENSE intense pain.

;_;
Again, why?

How in any way does the success of an enourmous game that arguably IS the mainstream incarnate, impact the indie market you support? Do you really think that the vast majority of CoD players could even name an indie game? Why does MW3 being the most successful thing ever bother you? Is it because Indie games like Minecraft do so bad for themselves? Oh wait...
What about Braid that guys now broke right? Oh wait...
How about Bastion that was made by like 7 people and. Oh wait...
Geneforge is unknown. So is Avernum. The Binding of Isaac scares people away. Yume Nikki is shrugged at. So is The Path. Darwinia has been forgotten. Uplink apparently never existed. Etc. I LOVED THE CRAP OUT OF ALL THESE GAMES.

Minecraft is an anomaly. Braid had an enormous budget with a good amount of hype. Not sure about Bastion yet. But it's quite interesting how you name three of the most famous indie games that can barely be called indie anymore.

I'm just upset that games I love are generally unknown and/or disliked, and War Shooter 137 is the one that sets the sales records. I hate war shooters, not a single one has impressed me and I can barely tell them apart when I do play. Why can't we embrace something different just for once? For me?

I'm surprised Modern Warfare 3 did better than Black Ops, I genuinely thought (and hoped) that Battlefield 3, not to mention the other blockbusters (Skyrim and Assassin's Creed namely) would take a sizeable chunk out of sales.
I was wrong :(
I'm not too surprised. Believe it or not, there are still people who are catching up to this generation: the ps3 & 360 have only sold about 2 thirds of what the ps2 sold when it was as old as they are. Then when they get a new one, why not wait for the new CoD rather than get your ass kicked all over the place with the old one; that's something you don't have to worry about picking up an old copy of Oblivion instead of Skyrim.

Battlefield 3 may have done better if EA didn't implement an online pass on it and hid away the best portion of the content from renters & borrowers; that weak campaign wasn't nearly enough to convince me to buy.
Asscree would've probably done better if it wasn't also a yearly release or had evolved to a different generation of assassins.
Skyrim would've sold better if people had any sort of faith that it wouldn't be completely broken...that's the only reason I don't own it yet.

And CoD has become a very social game. People get it just to play with friends who get it so as that social aspect of it spreads, so will the install base. I can't say I'm a fan of Activision and that Kotick guy sounds like a prick but MW3 is actually a fun game.
