Didn't John Hurt's Doctor always exist? There was always a Doctor that destroyed the Daleks and Time Lords, right? Is that really Moffat's mistake then? That Doctor always existed but we never saw him I guess. I've only seen the "new" Who, but I'm pretty sure the whole Time War was apart of the storyline long before.

I would take this as nothing more than an informal sort of thing. As in, yes the War Doctor is considered an incarnation of the Doctor (because, duh) but for the sake of keeping things simple and not getting all confused about it, every Doctor keeps their respective number so people know exactly which Doctor they're talking about when discussing them.

Key word: informal.

Are people really going to argue over this of all things? It just couldn't be more simple and yet people seem to be frothing at the mouth over it. Ridiculous. I'm not talking about on this site, I'm referring to on other sites where it's mentioned.

What people are up in arms about is that according to the number of Drs, pre the special, that Paul McGann regenerated into Chris Eccleston. John Hurt just got plumbed in for dramatic effect for the special and using the excuse that John Hurt didn't call himself the Dr then they didn't cheat with the old numbering. Personally I don't care, its a bit weak on consistency but Dr Who always has been. All I care about did the story work dramatically, in this case I think it did. I think people posting on the internet should be forced to listen this first

Oh, I see. I didn't watch that special. I also thought the Time War wasn't so recent and thought it had been apart of the Dr. Who lore for quite awhile. I assumed the John Hurt Doctor always existed but was never shown.

Wasn't this recent episode a farewell to canon? I just saw it as 75 minutes of saying 'The Old Doctor Who wasn't really canon, it only started with David Tennant!' They even disregarded lore set up with Eccleston. But I won't go into a rant, I went into one on another page about this series and CBA to copy and paste.
