My mom is interested into taking up some gaming. She is a bit of a fantasy nut (reads different fantasy books, Song of Fire and Ice, etc), and she wants to find a game that she could play.

- Nice landscapes, visuals
- Not too difficult or complex (she gets frustrated when she doesn't understand something right away)
- Fantasy rpg, ability to create and customize a character

Me and my sister were thinking Fable II/III, but if you guys could suggest anything else, it would be nice to give her some options.

EDIT: By mom-friendly, I meant mostly difficulty/complexity of the game. She's not too prudish when it comes to romance/sex/violence! :)
Demon's Souls, definitely go for Demon's Souls.

On a more serious note, Fable 2's probably a good choice seeing as you can't actually die in that game.

If she's into fantasy and you need one not too complex then:

The Fable Series,

Oblivion (you might want to download some mods for her first, they improve the game a lot).

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic- rather linear, simple controls still good fun though. Not very complex or difficult.

The Zelda series- not really rpg's but similar. There is a new version of Ocarina of Time coming out.

Kingdom Hearts games

I'd suggest the Baldur's Gate series if only for the wonderful writing, dialogue and characters but it's not exactly 'pretty' anymore (still look fairly good though- probably rose tinted glasses there) and is complex, being based on DnD.

The Witcher's again are awesome rpg's but probably too complex. (Perhaps on easy mode and isometric view where the subtleties of the game like potions are not needed?)

Oh, just noticed the customisation requirement. That knocks out some of these.

If you're not looking for a CRPG I can absolutely recommend "Blue Rose: The Roleplaying Game of Romantic Fantasy" from Green Ronin at http://bluerose.greenronin.com

If she's played pen and paper RPGs in the past, then go with Baldur's Gate if she's familiar with 2E D&D, Neverwinter Nights if she's familiar with 3E. If she's never played P&P, then something like Fable is probably the safest starting point, and from there probably an Elder Scrolls game if she wants more complex, or maybe Paper Mario if she doesn't?

I'd say Fable and Sudeki, both previously mentioned, are good ideas. They're fun games and easy to get a hold of, they are among the first games I played.

I've just got my sister playing Fable 2, and she took to it really well considering she hadn't up to this point touched any games but Sims on the Wii before.

If you're willing to go back generation, Kingdom Hearts, followed by Okami. WoW sounds good as well.

All I want to make clear is tha you should keep your distance when she's playing, you want her to learn on herr own, and she's more likely to be put off if your stood over her shoulder. Make her feel comfortable with a controller, then get out of the way.

Lord of the Rings Online or Saga of Ryzom. Both are pretty, have reasonably mature communities and free to play so she can try them and if she doesn't like them nothing is wasted.

I do think MMOs are a good choice as it allows her to connect to other people, providing the community is good.

Let her warm up with Fable.
Continue with Oblivion.
Learn tactics from Dragon Age Origins.
and finish up with Baldurs Gate 2.

Now you've got an authentic gamer mom. :)

Zelda or Oblivion, Zelda is a fun, Top down game... Wait, why should I explain this to you, even if your a slightly know how gamer, you know what zelda is, if she has a DS, get her a Zelda game for that, if she doesn't have one, theres ways to play the old zelda's over the internet, so hook her up with one of those.
Oblivion is simple, but fun, immersive and great for begginers, elderscrolls 4 would be good, when shes sick of that, toss Morrowind or Fallout 3 her way, then just let her dive into the median, giving her genre talk and stuff.

First foray into gaming? The Fable series does play like "My First RPG" so I'd go with it.

I'll have you know good man Paper Mario is not shit, it's one if the most fun rpgs one can play.
OT: I'd start with Fable or Oblivion.
1) I highly suggest you look up the meaning of the word "slang" since it was pretty clear to everyone else but you what I meant.
2) No, Paper Mario is shit. But thanks anyway.
1) Oh really eh? Did people message you going "Yes that was excellent usage of the word slang", or was it just nobody quoted you?
2) No, it's actually ingenius, maybe you just can't appreciate a game that is just fun.

The OP was referring to his own mum, not mothers in general. You're getting worked up over nothing.
Heh, if you think I'm worked up, you ain't seen nothin', mister! ^_^ (Besides, "never post angry" is a sound rule) I was simply pointing out a far too common generalization (which is exactly what that sentence is, if you pay attention to its syntax), which once conveys an antiquated and offensive stereotype.

Back on topic... I've been thinking that Baldur's Gate (particularly the second opus) might also be a good choice. It's still completely playable, even after all these years, even if it isn't the eye candy so many games are nowadays. It has masterful storytelling, a great soundtrack, and it's basically the epitome of the RPG. There's also Planescape: Torment which is an absolute masterpiece, but there's a lot of text to enhance the rich setting, and that's not for everyone.
And for both games, you have an enormous number of mods which enhance your playing experience (wouldn't dream of playing without the Widescreen Mod, for instance).

Atlelier Rorona is a great PS3 RPG for chicks, my wife loves it because as she says its cute, looks good, has nice crafting and fun battles. Its a turn base style of fighting and it really is addicting when you get into it.

Here is a trailer

Eternal sonata would probably fall under the too tough category. Oh wait no the actual game wasnt too tough just xylophone tower hours of my life wasted for a few achievements...worth every second...
