Mom-friendly 'pretty' rpg

My mom is interested into taking up some gaming. She is a bit of a fantasy nut (reads different fantasy books, Song of Fire and Ice, etc), and she wants to find a game that she could play.

- Nice landscapes, visuals
- Not too difficult or complex (she gets frustrated when she doesn't understand something right away)
- Fantasy rpg, ability to create and customize a character

Me and my sister were thinking Fable II/III, but if you guys could suggest anything else, it would be nice to give her some options.

EDIT: By mom-friendly, I meant mostly difficulty/complexity of the game. She's not too prudish when it comes to romance/sex/violence!

I thought Fable was pretty easy, but was the character really that customizable? I haven't played 2 and 3, so I don't know about those.

I would say Baldur's Gate, but D&D may not be the best place for her to start... Maybe Final Fantasy 7?

I suppose Fable is good enough, though it tends more toward action than I would recommend to someone looking for an RPG...

i'd agree with Oblivion. Fable has some character customisation, but thats buying hairstyles/facial hair and the good/evil choices change your appearance.

I'd say Oblivion is your best choice. Beautiful landscapes and a huge world, It's pretty straight forward and it's a fantasy RPG with the ability to create a character.

Oblivion seems to be a solid choice.

Or if she wants something less actiony and more thinky, Neverwinter Nights 2, provided you have a PC that runs it smoothly. Fairly pretty, lots of races and classes with skill customisation, very streamlined D&D ruleset, and if all else fails click "Recommended" on level up.

Dragon Age is pretty good too. And if thats too complicated tell her to try Dragon Age 2.

I just booted up World of Warcraft, and she seemed to have fun choosing a Draenei mage, she quit fairly fast but that because it was midnight here. I don't play WoW, could you explain the quest helper? It seems like something that might make her experience a little more straight forward.

I'd probably go with the majority recommend - Oblivion (the difficulty bar in game-play options will be her friend.)

Ya Fable 2/3 sound like a good idea, the difficulty there is nonexistent it only requires you to grind, and the stories are not that great.

You could also get her into Zelda and Final Fantasy, awesome worlds there, and the stories are very lighthearted.

Oh! Well that's simple! WITCHER 2

But seriously, if you have a PS2 then you should absolutely get Persona 4. It's simple but not boringly simple, has been critically praised for it's treatment of numerous unconventional subject matter, isn't sex heavy, and has an emphasis on friendship, discovering the truth behind lies, and of course killing demons with powers by summoning spirits linked to their souls.

Trust me, it's cheap, long but segmented, and VERY good.

Downsides:
-It's set in a small town in modern day Japan
-The protagonists are teenagers (good kind, not Jersey Shore kind)
-The graphics aren't amazing. At all. But they are good enough to immerse yourself in and to walk around talking to randoms
-Main Character is set

If you wanted a game that was cheap and much like Persona 4, but with the ability to choose a female main character and woo the male cast instead of the female, I'd suggest Persona 3: Portable for the PSP. However, the environments are cut down in that one and the areas can get repetitive. :/

Either way they are highly recommended for RPGs you'd never expect to be so deep and fun!

I'm kidding. Fable seems like a solid option.

Also, I know this isn't fantasy, but I think Fallout 3 or New Vegas(I prefer the latter) would be a good place to start. The action is not too intense, the world and the story (again, of the latter) is compelling, so she might love that in spite of it not being fantasy.

Or get her Skyrim when that comes out. That's a good option me thinks.

Planescape: Torment? None too difficult, stat games aren't too fiddly (hint: Max wisdom, high int, go mage ASAP at Mebbeth's in Ragpicker's Square, rest is easy), it's almost entirely talking over action - just as well, infinity engine combat is hardly entertaining - and has an astonishingly good cast and story. While it's not what I'd call "pretty", the art is very well done.

May I also suggest Morrowind? None too hard, though as hard to get into as any TES, I suppose. Huge world, interesting setting, looks rather nice without being generic at all.
