...But you still feared for your (video game character's) life. I had a few moments like this as I underwent the trials of Dead Space Impossible and Hard Core difficulties...actually, I had that on all my playthrough's but in any case.

I've heard recently my friend was playing a game when he got to a point where he was physically incapable of continuing the game due to sheer terror, not sure what the game was though.

So yeah, what were your moments of fear?

Every second in Minecraft, you have that feeling where when you're going around on the surface and you thi- SSSS BOOOOOM.

There could always be a Creeper around. In fact, there's one right behind you now.

I have fun with this in games. If I am in a crumbling building and I know that I have no time limit I will wait and laugh, like in left 4 dead, you can just stand in front of the evacuation chopper and it will never leave. but then again there are A LOT of zombies.
a better example would be the burning house in Zelda Twilight princess that I'm pretty sure never burns until you leave.
Edit: sorry misread.
I was very creeped out by the regeneraters in Resident Evil 4. la la la non scary zombie, oh that one's kinda creepy, BLAM! not so scary without your face are you? *walks away* *thing springs back to life and jumps at me* OH GOD! WHAT DO I DO NOW!?!

I second this, Minecraft is needlessly terrifying, especially if you've just struck diamond (or any other resource you consider valuable) and need to get back to base camp to make gear... at night.

Pretty much the entirety of Amnesia. You don't actually run into very many monsters at all, but that makes it all the more terrifying when you do. It always has you slightly on edge, even though it dosen't use what I consider to be cheap scares, (IE: monster jumping out of nowhere, etc) it's done very well.

The scenes with Alma during the first FEAR. I was told you couldn't be hurt, but I sucked so much at the game, I died during one.

Also, Minecraft. Scary ass hell.

When I was 7, I simply could not enter a room in zelda with redeads in it. I simply had to wait a couple years to continue.

Games almost never scare me, but Dead Space 2 managed to be the first game to do so when...

You go back on board the Ishimura. The areas were changed just enough to be both mysterious and disturbingly familiar. Unfortunately, they blew their chance for an extremely creepy encounter with your first enemy by making the first necromorph you fight a brute, which charges at you from down a long hallway. Not only could you see it coming from a mile away, brutes were way too easy in Dead Space 2. The reason they were difficult in the first game was because you always had to fight them in close quarters. In the second game you generally had a fair amount of breathing room when you fought them, which made the fights too easy.

Shadow of the Colossus. I had a sneaking suspicion that the next colossus MIGHT be in a lake, and I haven't touched the game since.

System Shock 2.

Even in menus, the game was still going and the monsters were creeping and you could look up from a vending machine to see a mutant leering at you just before it rips your head off...

The game really scares me.

Fatal Frame.

Dunno, I just can't do it. Something about that game really got to me and I never finished it.

Standing outside The Shalebridge Cradel in Thief 3. I spent a good 5 minutes trying to work up the courage to go inside. It got worse.

Vault 87. Fallout 3.

It took console cheats and "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" playing loudly on my laptop in order for me to complete that level, and it was still scary.

The exploding hallway right? Ya I died there too. When the explosions started I was shooting at Alma.. Didn't realize I had to run back.

There are 2 in lakes. They are not that bad though. I enjoyed them.

We played through Amnesia - Dark Descent in a single night with a couple of friends last weekend. So yeah. That's a game I could never play alone with headphones in the middle of the night.
