When my friend mowed down a load of guys and I got the final kill in Modern Warfare 2 by bouncing a frag off of one of his victims falling dead and hitting the guy off to the side.

COD:MW: Gaz'z death... I have never stared at a screen for so long thinking "you... bastards..."

COD:MW2: Ghost's death... My brother was shocked when I stood up and yelled "NO!! GHOST!! YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!!!" at the TV
+1 and +1 on both of those :)

On topic, the first long cutscene in ff7, escaping from midgar was little short of groundbreaking at the time.

The first time i built a mammoth tank in red alert.

The first time i emptied a clip into a room in Fear and saw the dust hanging in the air with over head light swinging to and fro..... And thought 'wow'

Blowing up a building and watching it crash into the ground in syndycate wars.. mmmmmmm

World of Warcraft: Sure, it's dorky and lame, but when the small friendly guild I was in at the time was one of the first on our server to kill Malchezar in Kara and later Kael'thas in TK, and everyone was screaming and cheering over ventrilo when the bosses went down, I gotta admit, it felt damned good. Not so much the next dozen times, but that first one was worth it! Very satisfying.

Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhall: Finally finishing the series and reading the epilogue for each of your companions. This is a series which if you play it from start to finish, importing your character from one game to the next, takes over 100 hours at the very least to complete. So when it finally comes to an end, a satisfying final ending, can't help but give a sigh of mingled relief and sadness that the story is truly over.

--Spoilers ahoy--
If you see the name of a game you haven't played and don't want spoiled then don't read any further obviously. Hell, might as well stop now!

The Longest Journey: Watching as April Ryan's life falls apart before you is heart wrenching. I consider April to be easily the most realistic and likable protagonist to ever grace a game, and seeing her life just being torn to shreds, it's not fun. Then the ending sequence, when she's simply walking away, not sure what to do anymore and no longer needed, left me feeling melancholy for quite a long time. As a *game*, TLJ is kinda shitty. But as a story it completely drew me in, and considering how cheerful and positive it was throughout the start, I wasn't expecting such a grim ending. No wonder April was so pissy in Dreamfall, I would be even worse had I been screwed over like that (proverbially) as well!

Neverwinter Nights 2 - Mask of the Betrayer: Standing atop the floating corpse of a dead god as he drifts through the void, burning fires which blaze in the giant skulls sockets making you realize that even dead gods have some power. Later on, besieging the realm of the God of Death yourself, and the tragic fate of Kaelyn the Dove thereafter and her doomed crusade.

Planescape: Torment: First, the realization of just what you are and more importantly what you've done in your past lives. I thought the moment when you meet Deionarra's father knowing that you, or at least an incarnation of you, was the one to lead her to her death earlier on was both sad as well as touching. Then near the end of the game, in a cycle doomed to repeat itself, watching as each of your long-time companions in turn are killed, one by one, even as you struggle to reach them. Annah in particular was sad to watch:

"He matter more to me than life!"
"Then DIE!"

Ending wasn't any happier either truth be told. Yet another of those sad, melancholy endings... is it noteworthy that so many of my most memorable moments are the ones that left me feeling sad and pissed rather than good? Probably.

I have no shame in admitting that a little bit of wee came out.

The end of disc 1 in Final Fantasy 7. (Seriously, if I need to explain it, god help you...)
Goes without saying. Also, Gold Saucer anyone?
Basically, the whole game. I still get shivers whenever I listen to the awesome, awesome soundtrack.

Golden Eye: Zooming into Bond at the very beginning on the dam
Hell yes!

Vampire the Masquerade -Bloodlines: The Hotel level early in the game. That had to be one of the scariest parts of a game I've ever played
Even heller yes. Amazing game.

The Legend of Zelda- Ocarina of Time:
12 years old and tears rolling down my face on Christmas morning because the opening is so beautiful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3avXA-S4NrU
The whole game was so beautiful.

World of Goo:
Being 26 years old and finding myself moved by the storyline of such a simple game.
Definitely.

Getting your first star on Super Mario 64.
I'm really surprised you were the first one to mention this groundbreaking game. I'm still awed when I think of it.

I feel kinda old, but no one has mentioned these:

Max Payne - the drug-induced nightmare level, with Max running through the darkness, following the baby's crying... that sent shivers down my spine.

Diablo - the first time (and the many times thereafter) hearing the words "Aaahhh... fresh meat".

The intro to Half-Life 1. And the first time you get attacked by a facehugger.

Duke Nukem 3D - maybe on no aesthetic or intellectual level, but still! Come get some!

Wow. Can people not learn to either use spoilers, or at least say what game you're spoiling?
I now know the ending to RDR and haven't even played it, even though I was waiting months for it to come out.
So, fuck you

And yes, I got rid of their posts just so other people won't get spoilers themselves.

OT: The beginning and the end of Mass Effect 2. Simply epic.
Oh shit guys! See what I did here! I said something while clearly naming the game that was going to be in the spoiler box, and not actually revealing the ending outside of the spoiler box!
LEARN TO FUCKING DO THIS

Final Fantasy 7: The very first "boss" you fight before leaving shinra for the first time. Also, the death of Aries, and for some reason...clouds date at the golden saucer!!

Final Fantasy 9: Garnets theme. I just LOVE that song, I've even learnt it on guitar now (although it's not as un to play as the FF7 boss music). And when you're running around looking for her. Another good one: the final cinematic.

Final Fantasy 13: Pretty much all the scenes at the firework display. And the scene right near the beginning, where the city is destroyed, and you find youself on those ice/crystal plains.

Kingdom Hearts 2: When Sora awakens. Also, the final fight.

Monkey Island 1: First game I ever completed.

Monkey Island 2: Escaping from being dangled over the acid pit (when you work THAT hard to figure something out...I think it always sticks with you). Finding out about your connection with LC.

Monkey Island 3: First time I beat it on "Mega Monkey" setting. The whole section on the rollercoaster.

Fallout 3: Facing off against the overseer just before leaving Vault 101.

Those are just to name a few. I really could reel of moments all day quite happily. I love my games :) And as you can no doubt tel, yes, I'm a pretty big fan of Monkey Island :p

Edit: I don't have a damn clue how I forgot it. But my first Nethack ascension!! I still remeber EVERYTHING about the ascension run, and most of the game leading up to it. Rest in peace Eladar the Dwarven-Lawful-Female-Valkerie!!
