This one I actually had earlier today:

The first time I encountered one of the Boys of Silence in BioShock Infinite. It was just a big anarchic swashbuckling action game but then BAM! Creepy looking fuckers that you can't kill and that make creepy-mask-wearing Lunatics swarm and pummel you.

Not helped by that one in the Warden's Office that's just standing right behind you, waiting for you to turn round.

I've said this in other threads, but Dark Sun from Disgaea 2 is the reason I haven't played it in a while.

lavender town always unnerved me. I would say the scariest moment in a non horror game I've had was the 8th dungeon and it's mini dungeon in Oot, the shadow temple. the first time seeing the dead hand was just....

The tornadoes in Croc terrified me as a child. I still find them quite unnerving, especially that one in the pitch dark.

oh my god yes, lavender town was terrifying as a kid, i remember the first time i got there, i had finally gotten out of the rock tunnel, barely, becaase i didnt have flash at the time, so i was hitting my nose agaisnt walls constantly, i go through that, then fight all those stupid trainers on the way to lavender town, then, that creepy ass song, and all the ghost stuff, i couldnt take it, i healed my team at the poke center after i had enough of that creepy town and hauled ass to the next town, fighting yet more trainer along the way, until i finally reached celadon city and i could finally rest for a while

the irony here is that, thats precisely what you had to do to progress further into the game

by nature I am a very jumpy person but some of my worst non-horror game related scares have been

the prior mentioned haunted boat wreck from okami as well as the f***ing cutter house
the first time I ran in to one of those telporting splicers in bioshock
also the first time I met a big sister in bioshock 2
endermen from minecraft they just creep me out
the shark from that one level in banjo-kazooie (back when I was a kid)

Any big fish in the water in video games ever. With the exception of Darksiders, I can't stand feeling helpless in the water as a giant fish comes out of nowhere and attacks you... Okami...
When in Okami are you attacked by big fish? You mean the creatures in the haunted ship?

OP: Speaking of Okami, the haunted ship. The giant seaweed hands, the ghosts of boss fights past, the trick treasure chests... they're all pretty fucking scary in light of the rest of the game.
It was the Water Dragon. The first time I played I was SO SCARED and I turned the camera and ASDKGHE I wanted to cry

Fable II, specifically the scene where I'm helping a woman find her lost child, I'm instead led into a creepy crpyt and then I suddenly hear her voice slow down in a deep tone while saying "Children, I bring you Flesh".

(At the 1:05 mark)

Still hearing that creeps me the fuck out sometimes because back then I wasn't expecting her to turn into a hostile White balverine.

After that the next usual scare would be when playing Minecraft if I'm in a dark cave and have less torches and lack of food and to top it off you can hear skelly's and zeds around you.

The 'Bottom of the Well' minidungeon of OoT creeped me the fuck out as a kid. Strangely Shadow Temple didn't so much.

Other than that, not really. Stuff that bothers me tends to be confined to horror or survival genres (FEAR, Metro, Stalker, etc).
At least the other big invasion, I think the timurids or something like that, gave you more turns before they arrived. Elephants with freakin cannons on their backs, that's a living SPG.

Let's see here...Skyrim, frostbite spiders scare the absolute shit out of me. They're the reason I never finished the game, just couldn't face them.

Crysis, first time I met and was murdered by a shark, looked so real at the time. The damn crocs in Far Cry 3 are even worse because I almost never see them before they latch onto me. Just swimming along in a cave when suddenly "OH SHIT POOP DOOKIE!"

Always felt that Dreamfall's creepier elements deserved more love. The otherworldly transitions are like something out of The Ring.

I remember this part in Fable II making me jump out my skin.

Sure it's not the scariest thing possible, but it really freaked me out the first ever time it happened while playing through.
Still remember jumping the first time. I thought the whole nightmare sequence at the end was a really good bit too, following that music box into the forest with your sister screaming at you.

"<url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgxxDpGvOkU>The open ocean is cold and dangerous."

I also always remember A Drug That Makes You Dream when it comes to video game fear. And not fear for my own safety. It's a special kind of pure terror when you arrive just in time to
interrupt your girlfriend's suicide attempt.

The first tomb raider any time you were in water. Even though if I remember correctly 90% of all the water in the game was actually pretty safe as long as you didn't drown. however I knew from the instructions that there were sharks and I believe pike or barracudas in the game and that you could only use the harpoon under water and ammo for that was really rare and you are really far in the game before you find it.

Any time you got into deep enough water to start the swimming animation I got a horrible knot of tension in my stomach. Then you get to the level where you've crashed in the ocean and it starts with you just in the middle of the ocean under water. I had to pause and walk away.

the only other time I had experienced something like that was the second Silent Hill in the very beginning when you have no weapon and you're walking down the dark gravely path, in the fog and I was sure that I could hear steps other than my own and then you come to the grave yard. nothing scary had happened yet but because I didn't have a weapon yet and I had played the first game I was way too freaked out to continue but silent hill is an actual horror game so I think I was more prepared for that kind of tension than I was when I played tomb raider.

Yeah, both instances are designed to make life as difficult as possible - the Mongols basically demand the production of heavy infantry and spears stacks because they just overrun artillery- and cavalry-based armies. Then the Timurids come along and devastate said massed infantry stacks with elephants and stupidly powerful artillery, requiring the fresh production of artillery and Cav-heavy stacks to beat properly.

The elephant artillery is just daft. It's like they looked at the Carroballista from RTW: Barbarian Invasion, decided they weren't OP enough already (even though a single unit could eviscerate heavy nonmissile stacks), and decided to turn it up to eleven.

Also, there are sharks in Crysis? I've never seen one! You're right about the wildlife in FarCry 3 though. The Cassowaries always used to surprise because they hunt in packs and seem to spawn rather aggressively.

The giant octos from Zelda Wind Waker use to scare the crap out of me. Just, everything about them is unsettling, especially the foreboding storm that happens when you're near their location. The first time I encountered one, I had to pause the game and take breather since I didn't expect it at all. even when I play now, I still have chills up my spine whenever I see those circling seagulls or when a storm kicks up in the game.

Zelda: Twilight Princess, those f*cking rats in the Arbiter's Grounds. If you've played it, you likely know the specific part I'm talking about. It scared the shit out of me the first time.

Half Life 1, and, like, the 4 other spin-offs manage to be pretty scary in their own right.

But Half Life 2 is far more horror-influenced than 1. The vastly improved graphics and aesthetic style are what makes the game a lot more scary.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask also manages to be absoloutely chilling at times, particularly when you really think about some things; in particular, Majora herself, and occasional bouts of Fridge Horror when you realise that, if you finish the game without doing all of the sidequests, then Termina is still a shit hole.

In Crysis go into the water and swim out a ways, a shark should appear nearby and it will kill you in one bite.
http://crysis.wikia.com/wiki/Sharks
As soon as I see one I activate speed mode and swim as fast as I can towards the nearest bit of land. It's bite does 500 damage, by comparison the rocket launcher you can use in the game does 300. For a man portable weapon that matches a shark bite you need a gauss rifle.
