Most games are "good" in one way or another, but very few make the jump to awesome. This thread is for those games.

Simple! Far Cry 3 jumped from being a good FPS with a decent story to "OMG THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER!!!!!!"(-me) when THIS MISSION came up. At first, I thought this was gonna be just a run-of-the-mill "kill everyone and do this" mission, but then the music came up. At that point I said to myself "you know what? fuck sneaking. BURN BABY BURN!!!!" And the rest was history.
So, what are the moments where other games became awesome?

Well, one for me was about a day after I had been having a conversation with a friend about how silly it was that NPCs in stealth games never notice people missing from their patrol routes.

The next day, I was playing Dishonored, and I knocked out and moved an NPC to a different section, then returned to my lookout above where he had been patrolling. A minute later, a guard walked underneath, stating aloud "Someone should really be keeping an eye out over here."

Also, the final boss of DmC: Devil May Cry. Playing through with the Classic Dante skin made it hilarious enough, but the final stage was just all kinds of awesome.

Well DMC4 was already fun enough... Then Mission 17 happened

Best cutscene ever created by a human. SO COOL!

"Hahahaha! You will fumble in your opposition of MY Quest"

*BOOM*

I have to second the DMC reboot final boss (that's the final final boss not the final boss) so awesome.

Oh and Persona 4 went from good, to really good to fucking amazing the moment boss Shadows were properly introduced and when the mystery gets rolling. The BAUS soundtrack helps too.

When I discovered that the story mode of BlazBlue: CT: EX has hilarious joke endings. REALLY funny stuff. It lets Rachel take off the verbal abuse gloves and be extra cutting with her snarkiness. She's a super powerful, probably immortal, teleporting vampire with several minions. Who the fuck is going to be able to reign in her shit-talking habit? Nobody that's who!

Basically, needless melodrama is my favourite thing ever.

Dishonored. Flood District.

At that point I went from 'Hey, I'm really digging the groove of this game.' too 'THIS GAME IS PLAYING JENGA WITH MY SOUL, AND I LOVE IT!'

CoD4. Nuke (this isn't a spoiler by now right?).

While there are many other games that I've found awesome, when it comes to single moments that in one move have made a game go up a whole level in my estimation, these are the two that particularly spring to mind.

Frog Fractions, when you...

upgrade the dragon power and fly into space.

It was just a cute little time waster until then.

Also, picking the color of your lightsaber in KOTOR 1. It felt like I was waiting my whole life for that. BECAUSE I WAS. Heh, I'm a Jedi now. Get to pick my own lightsaber. I'm not a failure, Pa!

I remember when I first played Link to the Past, I had thought the game would end after getting into the castle and taking on the wizard, and then OH NO DARK WORLD! I was like, "whoa, I'm not even halfway through. NIIIIIIIICE!"

Jade Empire, when you
return from the dead and prepare for the assault on Li's fortress. Coupled with the betrayal an hour prior, this bit raised the stakes to unbelievable levels.

Especially at about 8:23.

The entire boss fight just blew me away at how awesome it was. This would be considered final boss material in most other action games. Here, it was only the FIRST boss fight. It was at this point that I knew this game was awesome.

Fallout 3 when you escape the Vault and are blinded by light. Might sound stupid but as I had no knowledge of fallout or saw any marketing and was so immersed, I never saw it coming.

Metal gear solid 3 ...when it ended I realised I was Big boss...again I knew nothing of the game so was pretty confused while playing through it

Deus Ex- Hell's kitchen

Mass effect 1 - wow this citadel is pretty epic

Metal gear solid 1 ; walking into the hallway of blood and bodies. Just the build up of all the mysterious crap going on peaks at this point and I'm like oh crappp

I can't believe nobody has brought up the sacrosanct HL2 yet. The game itself was pretty damn good throughout. Then this happens:

Nothing before or since has ever made me feel more empowered or badass.

Old one: Final Fantasy X when Sin appeared for the first time.
New one: Anarchy reigns, when I piledrived a freakin helicopter into the group of enemies.
In between: Deus Ex Human Revolution, when I had to go over the fence, but I hadn't had good enough hacking skill nor did I have enhanced jumping, so I build a platform from a cardboard boxes and got over the fence this way, only to find a code to this door later.

For me,on both accounts,it's an "Awesome game becomes FUCKING ACES!" moment.

Who here played Supreme Commander, and it's expansion Forged Alliance? I have. They. Were. Awesome. So,original SupCom. Final mission for all sides, but special mention goes to the UEF version. Let me set the stage. Supreme Commander is a large scale science fiction RTS where you must build a base and produce a MASSIVE army to get anything done in a war that has spanned over a thousand years over hundreds of worlds. This mission, for all sides,is the battle for the Black Sun Superweapon on Hawaii. Black Sun was developed by the United Earth Federation as a means to end the Infinite War by using the game's FTL technology (Quantum Gates;think man-made Mass Relays) to deliver a planet obliterating energy beam to the core worlds of their enemies, the Aeon Illuminate and the Cybran Nation. Throughout the course of the game, which probably takes place over the course of months,if not weeks, the UEF was losing grounds as they focused all of their efforts to the development and deployment of Black Sun.

And so that brings us back to this mission. It takes place on Earth, which has been under siege since the beginning. The UEF are trying to defend Black Sun from their enemies, who have managed to establish bases mere kilometers to the North,Southeast, and Northwest of Black Sun's position. In the UEF campaign, you have to simultaneously defend Black Sun,your base around it,and then destroy the surrounding enemy bases, although only the one to the Southeast needs to get destroyed. During this time you're under constant attack by enemy air and navy, with occasional Experimental (think mobile superweapons) units coming in as well. Your goal as the UEF? Stop. Them. Dead. If you get the chance to play the mission,it's pretty damn awesome. As the Cybran, your sole goal is to capture Black Sun,and as Aeon you need to destroy the OTHER Aeon base (Infighting borne of religious doctrine) and capture Black Sun. What made this an improving moment? The sheer GRAVITY of it. This is the only mission, for any side, where you're given full access to your faction's arsenal. Before now,you couldn't build Experimentals. Now? You get all three. And then there's the tooltip for the activation of Black Sun. "End the Infinite War."

In the expansion,Forged Alliance, the moment comes MUCH earlier. First mission,in fact. The scene? A secret base, assaulted by a genocidal alien menace. It was supposed to be staffed by the best, using only the best tech. And they're getting CURBSTOMPED. Your mission? Bail them out. You arrive at an outpost as your door in is being destroyed, and it's your job to build a new base, from the ground up,to destroy a fully developed alien base producing their own Experimentals to save not only the base you're here to bail out,but also a nearby city. It just sets the tone for the entire campaign. Oh,and the aliens are backed up by crazy cultists with artillery and all-round better toys than you. Best part of the game? The final mission takes place on the exact same place the main game's final mission took place.

I know the feeling, as I was like that too. I'd never played a Fallout game, and hadn't seen any real advertising. I bought it on a whim and that moment was absolutely awesome. When you slowly see the light fade and the wasteland opens up before you.

I found a lot of things with Fallout 3 to be like that. It was full of moments when you could pause for reflection and think "that was so cool". While other Fallout's have many better things, none of them really have the same kind of feeling as far as I am concerned.

Dude it was Ass Creed 1. So you do the whole thing where you get up close to your target and all for the first time and then *BOOM* take down. Exposition occurs.

Then you're in the middle of a bunch of dudes that want to kill your ass.

*Kick Ass Chase Theme Starts*

Shit just got smothered in awesome sauce.
