I'm probably just catching up but the other day I watched the trailer for Battleship and learnt it features Aliens. So rapidly moving on from that topic it got me thinking about the idea of turning board games into films, this inevitably lead me to the most well known of board games; Monopoly. I thought about all the ways such a film could work, and since Battleship is willing to play it straight faced and serious I will to. To me, I could see a film about a rising star of business and his relentless ambition. Considering the current social climate, economy, capitalism and the super wealthy are some of the most talked about topics right now.

So why not roll with that?

Monopoly could be a story that examines the pros and cons of capitalism and the free market. I know that's asking a lot of a film about a board game but that's simply the only way I could see a film about this game being awesome. So what are your thoughts? Do you have your own idea about how such a licensed film could work?

It could be done. Use a guy was an allegory for, as you mentioned, the pros and cons of capitalism and blardy blah. Bonus points if, in his old age, the guy actually looks like Mr. Moneybags, aka the Monopoly guy. Or just get Martin Sheen.
He buys up properties and utilities until he literally owns a good chunk of what makes the city run. He suddenly finds it's entirely too much to handle on his own, and every time he loses control of something or another, that property/utility/service suffers for it.
It's based loosely off a game, yes, but I'm smelling Oscar bait, here. Like I said, get Martin Sheen.

I'd only pay to see a Monopoly movie if it were written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. And EVERYBODY from Resevoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction reprise thier rolls from those films. Even the dead ones. and err...I want a Pony too. And a Lollypop. And Daryll Hannah's eyes in a jar. Yeah. So there.

Yes. I could see it as you of those artsy films like The King's Speech that no one sees but gets tons of Oscurs.

The only board game I can think that would really work is Cluedo for obvious reasons. However the OP's idea for a monopoly film could actually work well.

Obviously, there would be multiple major characters, each of whom has some connection to one of the tokens. The protagonist likes go-carts, the villain wears a top hat, there's probably an old lady with a dog, all that good stuff.

I believe that they already made a Cluedo movie. It had Tim Curry in it.
