Monster Hunter portable 3rd question

I am not too familiar with consoles or the game titles in general (well nothing past say Super Nintendo) i was looking up some videos with my little brother (who is 23, so im not some snot nosed kid)and also wikipedia'd the series, i have a Playstation 3, but i never use it...I want to play this series and from what i am reading it seems possible that i can play it on the PS3, or is this not correct? I don't have a PSP, do i need a PSP in order to play this game on the Playstation 3? I don't want to buy the game, then find out i have to have a PSP first.

According to Wikipedia, the only 3rd Gen Monster Hunter to be released outside Japan were on the Wii.

It seems an upgraded version will be ported to the WiiU early next year.

PSP and PS3 versions were Japan only releases.

Yes its only on PSP and then there is Tri on the Wii. There is a MH game on PS3 in japan but I think it's an HD release of Freedom 2. There was some discussion as if this would come to the US via download on PS3. I still don't see why they haven't released a MH on console besides the Wii in the US and why they released it on the Wii of all things is beyond me. The MH games are great only thing I hated was lack of camera control and no lock on in it so it was a little tough of course "hardcore" MH gamers will say that it just adds to the difficulty and builds your skill. Yeah right.

Well it's only out in Japan, but the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD (Ps3 version) is playable on any PS3.
