Spider-Man? SPIDER-MAN?!?!
With the exception of Mega man and Ryu, you wouldn't know an actual video game character if he moleseted you up the ass with the portal gun, creating a wormhole that allows him to pull your freaking brain out of your skull and b-b-q it.

Because Master Chief is the epitome of video game characters.

Oh-oh, the Portal Gun can be an item in the game! You all know how it works, right.

I know I'm gonna catch crap for this, but I don't think that these characters would work out in SSBB (with a couple of exceptions). Master Chief doesn't belong in it; MC would either be too overpowered, or would be as deadly as a nerf ball. Also, lets not forget that a Spartan showed up in DOA 4...and sucked. The same would probably happen to MC. Kratos is just a little to 'mature' for Brawl. Too much slaughter, gore, and sex for Nintendo. Ryu doesn't need to cross over to Brawl. Moving him from one fighting game to another would be pointless.
He'd be a little too serious for it. Megaman and Zero would be alright. I'd say Megaman only; too many clones (*coughFoxFalcoWolfcough*) detract from the game.

Spiderman...ummm interesting idea. I don't think he'd be a very good character. Spidey's attacks would vary from a web shot to a different web shot. *snore*

I definitely LOVE the idea of a Guitar Hero assist trophy. Maybe not Johnny Napalm in particular...how about the God of Rock instead? He looks like he'd be able to summon lightning bolts while 5-starring Bulls on Parade.

I really would love to see something from Space Station Silicon Valley worked into it (for those of you who have not played it, feel ashamed). Maybe have Evo hop from character to character, moving them randomly and attacking sporadically.

Well, just because we have ideas for these characters, doesn't mean we'd exactly think of them as good ideas to put into Brawl (although I might only be speaking for myself here). For example, a lot of people would be pissed if Zero had got in, because that would most likely mean that Mega Man wouldn't (otherwise they'd be overdoing it with the third parties).

EDIT: The way I worded that last sentence makes it sound as if I think Mega Man is in the game, but I think you know well enough the point I'm trying to make.

As for Spider-Man, there's a lot of different ways he can use his webbing. (see moveset: a grapple move, a projectile stun move, a charging move, and a shield/radial move, all of which he's used in his games before).

The strength characters in their respective games doesn't really matter, seeing as how in Smash Bros, Jigglypuff can take down Ganondorf.

I've a few responses to that...
1st, MC's Spartan Laser would be less powerful than Halo 3's with a faster reload time. His normal moveset will derive from the lady Spartan from DOA4. He'll be slow, but with normal strength and jumping ability.
2nd, the game will make no mention of Kratos' sexual conquests, and his moves will not be blood-inducing. Also, his blades will only extend for his grapple/tether recovery move and the Cyclone of Chaos.
3rd, sure, it could be the God of Rock, but it has to be a Nintendo song (or any other song relevant to a 3rd-party character in Brawl).
4th, what does "sporadically" mean?

As an assist, how about a remix of some old school characters that are already in there? Like an 8bit looking mario with the barrel smashing hammer or an 8 bit link that tosses an 8 bit bomb, or shoots a beam from his sword..
Course most of the kids playing SSBB wouldn't have a clue and would think it stupid..
How about one of the Battle Toads? Bonk (does anyone else remember that one?)? Also, a great one that was actually a manga character but did make an appearance in a Tekken; Gon! the little dino guy.

lol sporadically basically means randomly...The character wouldn't just go on an attacking spree, it'd sometimes just stand around or do other odd things.

Unfortunately SSB is getting there. I don't find it hard to imagine the next one having over fifty characters. They've got what, 30 in the upcomming? And a good 15 are clones of other characters with slightly changed move sets. (Slight exhageration, but if you think about it, not so much)
Fortunately, it seems they come out with a SSB once every console generation, unlike a certain other party game. So while it may indeed be headed to a MvC like state, we probably have another generation or two until we get there.

Other characters, well...I'd certainly like to see Banjo-Kazooie in there. Or even better - Mumbo-Jumbo.

I have to say that my one true gripe is that Megaman *isn't* in the SSBB lineup, because i.m.o., he'd be a perfect Samus foil/clone. While Zero and his manly sword would presumably look as visually impressive (a.k.a. badass) in SSBB as he always has in the Megaman series, I do think that he'd feel like a toss to the fans and a pointless extra that could be filled with another well-liked character from another game series. I haven't gone so far as to develop movesets, but I do hope that if another installment of SSBB cames along, that Megaman finally gets his due.
And actually, I think it would be a great idea to put some "old-school" references in a next-gen game because of the marketing possibilities for Nintendo. Getting some of the younger generation involved in downloading those older games onto their Wiis can only be a money boost for the Japanese Gaming Giant.

there are refferences to old school games in the new smash. they give you demos of a lot of the older 8 bit and 16 bit games. its pretty cool i think.
