Several years back I was a huge fan of Morrowind. Lacking a PC, I've only played the Xbox version - which is a sad story, I know - and I absolutely loved it.

Later, after coming back from a failed trip to Cyrodill in Oblivion, I started to miss my old home in Vvardenfell. This feeling stopped when I was introduced to the Capitol Wasteland in Fallout 3, which looked and felt like Fallout but played more like a mixture of both Morrowind and Oblvion, using some of the better aspects of both.

Right now, I want to head back to Vvardenfel. This time around I'm going for the PC version, I want to see what the game is like with mods. Especially after having read the recent article of Experienced Points by Shamus here on the Escapist.
My problem though, is that there's just so many of them... I'm not sure which ones are worth it, and which ones I should avoid.
I'm looking at the list at Texnesus, and it's a bit overwhelming to be honest.

Can anyone recommend me some mods to start out with, mods that you really shouldn't miss out on when playing the game? I mean, tell me your favorite must-have Morrowind mods, what they add or do, and I'll try them out.
Being more of a console gamer, the idea of anybody being able to add anything into my game is a bit scary, as it seems it could easily ruin a game, not just improve it.

The biggest mod that I've ever run was Baldur's Gate Tutu, so I really don't have much experience with it.

I would say that graphics mods are probably the best, most mods come with tutorials or readme's telling you how to add them into the game.

But yeah, there its lots of different texture and graphics mods out there, you are best off finding a mods website such as www.planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com. This is a very good website for Elder Scrolls modding it is where all the good mods are, just look for Morrowind at the sidebar on the left and you'll see the mods section.

Have fun!

Most mods for Morrowind were graphical or added new weapons or armor. There were very few gameplay altering mods because, unlike Oblivion which piled stupid design decisions on top of stupid design decisions, the gameplay in Morrowind was solid.

Check out this site. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/categories.php It has mods for TES 3 and TES 4.

There is always Telesphoros' List o' Mods.

The graphics can be improved a fair amount with Better Heads, Better Bodies and one of the Texture packs.

Better Bodies [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=213] - makes the body meshes better and of a higher quality

Better Heads [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2735] - same deal, only with heads and hair styles. there used to be a complaint that everyone ended up looking like a 16 year old, but that's been changed, there are now old faces.

Galsiah's Character Development [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2030] - removes level caps, re-balances game, add magicka regen, changes leveling system, probably much more.

Real Signposts [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=62] - makes sign posts readable in the game world, rather than in a pop-up box

Morrowind Graphics Extender [http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/] - gives morrowind loads of graphical tweaks, including increasing the draw distance, reflective water, shaders, widescreen resolutions, and much more.

Morrowind Script Extender [http://sourceforge.net/projects/mwse/] and Morrowind Enhanced [http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2576] - these two mods increase the scripting opportunities, I think. lots of mods use one of these, they can be run alongside morrowind.

there are lots of shit mods, but these ones are okay. just remember that vanilla morrowind is also fine.

if you haven't got pc morrowind yet, make sure you get the game of the year edition, it comes with Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Tribunal brings some updates to the exe, the most noticeable of which is an updated journal that allows you to search by quest and topic.

Morrowind doesn't need any mods apart from the graphical enhancements. If you absolutely have to install a mod I'd recommend GCD.

Thank you for the advice, everyone. Especially MusicalFreedom. I'm actually not that surprised that the best Morrowind mods are the graphical ones, while the Oblivions ones deal with the gameplay for some reason.
