I just watched Metallica live in concert exactly one week ago. It was loud. My ears weren't back to normal till Saturday. Great concert too.

The point being heavy metal's always loud, or at the very least you should expect that.

I think the better comparison is that the stage hands should be given appropriate ear protection and not expected to listen to the speakers without said protection for extended periods of time.

Obviously all the power plant workers that died at Chernobyl only have themselves to blame for choosing to work at a NPP. It was not the fault of the oppressive USSR regime for not giving them proper security briefings, emergency training or education in how their specific reactors worked. It was their own for wanting to work with nuclear power. Clear as day. (Also /s for safety)

More people need to realise that you can refuse orders from your boss that put your health at risk needlessly. Whether that's mental or physical health. But as long as most people just do whatever the boss says they can put the few who stand up for themselves on a mental list of 'find a legal reason to fire this one'

You basically just described a union. Which I'm personally all for, but I know plenty of people aren't.

Not really, I don't need to be in a union to refuse to use a powersaw on a building site without a guard for the blade say for example. But thats not a commentary on unions. Maybe Unions went to fight for us back in the day to get these laws sorted but everywhere civilised workers have the right to refuse dangerous work, they just so often don't practice it because of the pressure I feel.

As others have already said in this thread: What happens when you don't have a union and refuse dangerous or unhealthy work? If your boss is decent, they'll reassign you to some other task and no harm, no foul. If they ain't, and there are lots of shitty bosses in places where unions are weak, they'll let you go. Maybe, if they really need to, they'll even find some trumped up excuse about why you are fired. The video game industry isn't a place known for its job security or great working conditions, so why would this be any different from things like PermaCrunch?

That's even assuming that those asked to watch all these execution videos and such understood the mental health risks they took when they accepted/were given the task. This is one of those things were you don't know where your line goes until you cross it, so maybe they thought they'd be fine with watching some butchering videos and the occasional ISIS beheading video, only to realize that that absolutely wasn't the case.
