Okay so it's raining where I am leaving me stuck in my house. It got me thinking of the days where I willingly stayed at home, obsessed with a video game that for the life of me I couldn't put down.

So my fellow escapists, What is the most addictive game you have ever played? I'm not talking Online Multiplayer addictiveness, but I mean the game that absolutely pulled you into its core and refused to let you escape from its grasp.

For me, It would have to be Banjo Kazooie for N64. This game took from me months and months of time away from my life. I remember when I was younger I would wake up at 4 in the morning just to play Banjo Kazooie before I everyone else woke up.

What's yours?

The Civilization series is notorious for its "just one more turn...oh shit, it's 4am already?!" syndrome. Bloody addictive, but they are also a great series. Civ4 is my personal favorite, but you'll hear different opinions on that as well. Alpha Centauri is even worse in its addictiveness, but truly butt-ugly...

I tried to play Alpha Centuari, but I just couldn't get past it's look. I don't need things to look super fancy or anything, but I guess I have some limitations. I've never played a Civ game, but I have gotten into Age of Empires 2

Morrowind, because every hill and every door had an adventure behind it. Every nook and cranny had to be explored before moving on. Part perfectionism and part because I was frightened of missing out on anything. These factors plus countless others meant I just couldn't stop playing. Oblivion was similar, but to a lesser extent.

A lot of sports games get me hooked on them for the longest time, but not madden god no those games can't keep me hooked they just make me play them every so often. Now the games I'm talking about are the NBA 2K series and the MLB the show which have their own make your own player and make him a superstar mode which I always get hooked on because I love making my own guy and making him unstoppable. Also I always find myself wanting to make a superstar for each position so I always replay it to do that.

Other than that other games get me hooked for awhile but not to the extent of those games which I always go back to if I'm bored and I don't want to replay any other game.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for me. I could hit the streets for entire weekends, just slogging through drive-bys and gang wars with sheer delight.

The Sims
Civilization
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Fortresscraft (Minecraft, but on the 360)
Dragon Age: Origins

These games have my attention span in a vice grip and they do not let go for several hours.

I can't blame you. The game looks exactly like the inside of my stomach, which may or may not was exactly what served as the inspiration for the art style. Alpha Centauri is amazing once you get past the whole it being hideous thing, but...we're only human, right?
I'd still suggest you give Civ4 a try. The complete edition (with the 3 addons) is on Steam for $30. The art style is infinitely better (a bit dated and cartoonish, but still nice to look at), and there's quite a bit of humor hidden in the game, as well as a ton of historical info in the encyclopedia. It also comes preloaded with a bunch of mods that will make kill even more time. Civ isn't like AoE, given that it is turn based, but it's one of those classic PC games that continues to enjoy a great deal of popularity.

I don't get where all the hate for Alpha Centauri graphics came from, it looks just fine to me.

I think the Aesthetics have held up perfectly well.

I couldn't get into it myself, but that's just because I was no good at it.

OT: The most addictive games I can think of right now are Mass Effect 2 and more recently, L.A. Noire. I literally spent all of the free-time I could playing both of those until I finished them, they were just so good that I didn't want to do anything else.

Let me be perfectly clear: the game is amazing, but it looks like my bathroom after a night of heavy drinking. I'd happily pay $100 for a remake, just as long as it comes in colors other than blood red, placenta purple, vomit brown, and what-the-hell-did-I-eat green excrement. Normally I'm not at all picky about graphics, but even I have limits...

A lot of sandbox games and RPGs come to mind...

Minecraft and Pokemon pop up first; I would say Team Fortress 2 but it's multiplayer only.
