The appendix. So goddam awesome we don't know what it does.
Not true actually. People have known for years that the appendix is a left over organ that used to be for breaking down tough plant matter when we were still hunter gatherers, but it still hasn't phased out of our evolution yet. The reason it becomes inflamed and needs removal is because in some cases small pieces of food will still get sent there, but it no longer has an exit, so it just sits there for an extremely long time, unabsorbable and unused. If enough food is sent to it then that is what causes most appendicitis.

EDIT: Forgot to put down my vote for best body part award! I'm gonna vote for the Eye. Seriously, without it you wouldn't even be reading this thread, or percieving the world as we know it. Without the eye humans would have evolved as cave dwellers that never even encountered the light of day.
Like that other person I'll have to say hat what you just said is what THEY want you to think.
Oh shit...you're right! My whole life has been a lie...a lie...

Just going to throw in that no single part of the body is more 'advanced' than any other. Each has taken exactly the same amount of time to develop as all the rest. To all those that say Brain, it's pretty under utilised by the modern human, most of it is backup space in case of damage. While singals are sent through the whole thing, large areas see minimal activity and act as junctions between other areas. If damage occurs these areas then become more active to compensate.

You would have a hard time if your lungs were as inefficiant as the Brain, a large proportion doing very little. Actually, you would have a pretty tough time if any part of your body was comparably to the Brain in that regard.

The part of the body which I would like to nominate however would be the large/small intestine. It is so complex a feature it is regarded as a ecosystem of it's own right due to the range of organsims that live there in a form of symbiosis with the rest of you.

And flies. And cats.

OT - The brain and also the eyes. The eyes make you see.

Hey there all, currently I am doing a biology course and as in all biology courses there is a section of it that includes the human body/ anatomy/ internal.

While re-learning all of this material (Because that is what education is, you just learn something then re-learn it over and over again only more in depth each time) I figured out even more about how truly amazing the human body is, how advanced our bodies are, and what all our bodies can do, even without us knowing.

I wanna know, what system or part, or other scientific terms that relate to the body that you find the most extraordinary. And why so?

I would have to say the Immune system, it works to fight off hostile and unknown viruses/organisms and while it's doing that, it creates protocols to ensure that you won't suffer from whatever it is fighting again.

Or in layman's terms: I think that the immune system is a pretty cool guy. eh fights off viruses and doesn't afraid of anything.
Wish I stuck with human biology I would have to do normal bio and I could be with the girl I fancy more. As well as disection, ah what ab awesome class it was, a majority of last years memories were in that class.

Personally, I find the structure and function of a Gall Bladder most fascinating.

I like the ear, or more specifically, the inner ear and ear drum. Such a tiny, tiny collection of bones and we get so much from it. Of course, I realise that our brains interpret sounds (and we all interpret them differently), but it's an amazing little device.
