I'd have to say Gothic 3.

Well, the vanilla version was more like a mix of fun and frustration, because it crashed about 10 times before actually starting, crashed about once every hour after that and I heard it occasionally corrupted savegames too. But man, I just couldn't stop.

When I played it the first time it took me about 100 hours, followed by an immidiate second playthrough trying to reach 100% completion (and failing of course).

And with the latest Community Patch, Questpack, Graphic Improvements and so on it's better than ever and nearly stopped crashing at all. However, I don't know if it is as good in English as the Gothic Series always relied quite a bit on atmosphere to make up for the Combat System, the bugs and other failings.

1 and 2 were awesome too and I finished both of them 5-10 times, but they just don't last that long.

If I start playing any of these games by myself at any given time I won't want to stop and neither will you:

Resident Evil 4

Streets of Rage 2

DJ Hero 2

Burnout 3 / Burnout: Revenge

EDIT: I'm glad I'm not the only ones to have mentioned these as I look back at the other comments.

Mario kart double dash.

Time trials are pretty much the only challenging part of the game. I say that mainly because mario kart single player is really easy, so really, challenging yourself is the best part of the game. I would say the multiplayer is good too, but this is about single player, and most of my replayability of that game comes from time trials. Also, not as fun when you beat them by miles all the time :(

Saints Row Dieu, pure unbridled fun, throwing a C4 charge at a random pedestrian, spawning a mini helicopter, piloting it over to a clothing shop then putting on a Mankini and doing it all over again.

Frickin' awesome fun!
Sub this with just cause 2 and you have my vote.

My personal two favorites are Red Faction: Guerrilla and Transformers: WFC. Some of the best SP action I've seen in a long time.

JC2, Minecraft, roguelikes (Dwarf Fortress in particular) and Monster Rancher (only 1 and 2), you get a fair bit of replay value.

For actual number of playthroughs, though? Sacrifice, without a doubt.
dude, frikken Monster Rancher. i was upset when i went to America as a 10 year old (already having a few years of play-value on Monster Rancher 1) and bought Monster Rancher 3... spent a lot of the holiday getting excited to play it only to take it home to England and find it didn't work ¬_¬

anyway, enough crappy childhood memories of despair, I've also completed Ape Escape (1 and 2. 3 didn't impress me as much... still played it twice), Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 4, Golden Sun series. Oblivion is a good contestant too.

Trust me, it's for the best.

MR1 and 2 are great. The handheld ones are... acceptable. Ish.

As for what happened to MR 3, 4 and EVO? We too it to a farm ranch, where it'll be happier.

Seriously, best to forget those ever happened. Especially 3 and EVO.

Happy to see so many people have good taste! Saints Row 2 and Just Cause 2 were built with fun and enjoyment in mind.

Saints Row 2, and Morrowind.

Hitman: Blood Money's pretty good, it has massive replay value. :D

Basically most RPG's and free roam games like Fallout, Red dead, Infamous, Prototype etc.

Most fun? Saint's Row 2 hands down. No game lets me steal a plane as a naked fat chick with a pink beard and a mans voice, jump out of said plane onto a person below, and then use an actual teabag animation on the poor person you already killed. Oh, and the taser.

Got to be Saints Row 2. I play it for about 10 hours, forget about it for a month of so then come back and do another ten hours. This cycle comes after I had already played the game for about 100 hours.

in terms of mental stimulation, i'd have to say ninja gaiden (original, black, sigma, whatever). what makes the game so special is how it handles difficulty. most games just give you less health a beef up the enemies, but ninja gaiden does them one better. every difficulty has new enemies, and usually not just palette swaps, they have new skins, new properties, and new attack animations. enemies that might pull out your hair in other games keep you engaged because they are just so damn cool to fight. bosses get new attacks and punish old crutch strategies. on top of all this, its never totally overwhelming, unless you were skip difficulties. its always gradually getting harder, challenging you to play just a little tighter than you were 5 minutes ago. the game is never cheap either so every victory feels like you are totally awesome. you could play that game for a year and still not beat master ninja, though you might still be trying.

I have to say any game from the Total war franchise. Lost many a weekend to those games. Just something about the mix of real time, and turn-based game play, that gave it a never ending appeal.

For stupid, crazy fun: Serious Sam.

Lots of weak baddies on screen and oversized weapons make for ludicrous gibs.
