This was supposed to be a topic expressing my deep, everlasting hatred for minions. However, I decided to take a different approach.

What are the most annoying things a boss can do during a boss fight?

My top two are: 1) Spawn minions and 2) heal itself.

Please, we're here to help you through this. Now is the time to tell us what those mean ol' boss monsters have done to you.

Spawning minions that look alot like the boss so you end up shooting at the wrong ones.

Summoning a buddy halfway through the fight.

It's why a loathe the Maneaters from Demon's Souls. Gargoyle Demon from Dark Souls was alright though, as long as you kill the first one fast, the second one was cake but the Maneaters had way too much health.

become invincibly for a set time period and you just have to run around damaging their powerful attacks.
SO ANNOYING!

Yeah, gotta go with minions too. Though self heals are also pretty annoying. I also hate unskippable intro speeches/cinematics leading into tough boss fights but that's less about the boss being annoying and more about the developers lacking intelligence.

...upon death send you back to the beginning of the GAME only to have to fight through it again with double baddies.

I don't mind minions so much as healing. I hate it when bosses heal themselves. It's very demoralizing to see that health bar replenishing, especially if it is a hard boss to begin with. Also, any boss that has moves that are difficult to dodge/parry/block/what-have-you I find to be very annoying.

Instant death attacks/events. I think that applies to any genre, though the two most bullshitty that come to mind (in recent history) are the final bosses in Bayonetta and Final Fantasy XIII. These fights are already obscenely long and BAM game over can come out of nowhere.

1: Regenerate whilst you fight minions who appear from no-where (I made sure this room was empty before taking on this guy?!)
2: Talking relentlessly before overly dramatic death (I've shot/stabbed/cursed you to death a million times and now you want a chat? I want a sandwich and a lie down, just die!)
3: After said dramatic death, letting you believe he's dead before getting up for round two (see whitty comments from answer 2!)

I have two boss pet peeves.

One, the previously mentioned "boss that heals itself." The other, the boss that has umpteen more powerful forms that are never hinted at, and only appear after you've killed the first (and what you thought was only) form.

My biggest is unbreakable combos, one after another. This might be common in fighting games, but Jet Li's game was about that.

Repeatable stun lock combos that can hit you again before you've had time to move/dodge/block, and knock you out of the textured area, into some kind of black abyss of nonexistant gamespace. >.> Hate when that happens.

I first figured this thread would've been about bosses at work to which I figured to say 'fire you', but since it's about videogame bosses...

Well, a lot of the usual ones have already been mentioned..
I think 'unpredictable patterns' would be a good candidate. Aka, a boss that changes its attack pattern on each and every try to fool you into thinking you can just trial-and-error it through.

Make clones of itself and hit me no matter where I am or regardless of any attempts I make to evade an attack.

When your fighting a boss and it's intense but doable when suddenly the boss drops to 1/4th health and pulls godmode out of it's ass and becomes invincible except during one nanosecond window.

I also agree with everyone who said they hate bosses that heal.

healing itself, in small ammounts, like leeched from hitting YOU, i can deal with, or if you failed to stop him from casting, thats fine.

If its just "woop, 100% hp again." thats infuriating bullshit. one round of combat just negated the last 20. yay.

IM LOOKING AT YOU PAPER MARIO 1 BOWSER.

Have 3 health cycles, as in I defeat it, then I defeat it again, then I defeat it a third time. All the while I use the same tactics, hate it.
