When I was younger it was Aliens vs Predator 2 playing through the Human missions. All youve got is dark metal rooms and the beep of the sensor on your gun. That was my world most nights. Nowadays id have to say maybe the origional condemmed I never completed it as I couldnt bring myself to but playing it I had to keep reminding myself that the people running at me wernt real and I could switch it off when I wanted. Really had my heart going walking around some places

My top 3.

1. Bioshock. You can go into that game and see that this city use to be great, but is now the staging site for a bloody civil war.

2. Dead Space. The crazed survivors, the very quiet atmosphere, and the dark corners really made this game enjoyable.

3. Left 4 Dead. The orginal (While not as fun to play as the sequel) had a fun, dark, strange idea to the Zombie Apocalypse and it worked out pretty well.

Condemned and Fallout 3 did it for me. Other games that almost got there usually had something that came along and ruined it at crucial moments. I think the first person camera does a lot to add to atmosphere, because it's YOU.

Yes, this one probably takes the cake, but Bioshock and hl2 are both also very good. From what I've heard/seen system shock 2 is up there, but I didn't play it myself

Dead Space and Bioshock creeped me out the most.
Same. They're the only games in my current-gen library that actually made me go slow because I keep checking every corner slowly as well as always looking at my back.

I'm going to play Assassin's Creed 2 soon, so that might be a candidate. Nothing like running through or simply walking to absorb the city's atmosphere, which GTA 4 killed by making the car driving really irritating.

Stalker and Morrowind, I can remember feeling cold playing Morrowind when it was raining in game, even though it was summer.

FEAR, Dead Space, and Condemned were all really atmospheric, but Bioshock easily the most atmospheric game for me, the beginning of the game was almost overwhelming to me due to the atmosphere I couldn't believe how well it was done.

I also thought Mirror's Edge did a good job of giving the right sort of "atmosphere" for running along the tops of skyscrapers and through office buildings.

Good adventure games excel at this. Riven, Myst IV and Dark Fall were the most atmospheric for me.

Also Ico, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein (I admit the last one might be because it was the first shooter I'd played since Doom II. ...But the crypt levels had me in cold sweats.)

The game of life (har har)

But seriously, after a night playing Dead Space, you're not likely to be the same again.

<--- and Far Cry 2, the action animations and the beautiful folage make it feel just like Africa. Only thing is, there are like twenty buildings in the whole country. :/
