Most Bad-ass way that a character has died.

Someone mentioned Star Trek, which in turn brought to mind...

Data. The android who'd come so far in his quest to be more human, who in his final moments locked out everything he'd learnt, became inhuman, to save his ship, sacrificing himself in the process.

But for actual badass, I'd have to go with:

V from the film version of V For Vendetta. to quote:
Cready: 'We've got guns.'
V: 'No, what you have are bullets and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer standing, because if I am, you'll all be dead before you've reloaded.'
[The finger men empty their magazines]
V: 'My turn.'
[V kills them all, strangles Cready, and then makes it back to the Evey and the train of explosives before finally dying. The destruction of parliament forms something of a viking funeral for him.]

Really I could go with any of the characters that takes those mothers with them.
Be it either self destruct
Burns out of Vanquish
or just fighting to the last
Emile from Halo Reach

To be specific though I'm gonna go with the guy from Independence day.

Thanks. Got any good stories yourself?
I've got one. During an attack on an Illithid outpost in the sewers beneath a city, My lv. 15 fighter got an Illithid tadpole implanted in his head in the middle of a fight. That's how Illithids reproduce. He died after the fight when the thing ate his brains from the inside and was transformed into a lv. 15 Illithid Psion as the tadpole took control of his body. The DM then forced him to fight the other members of his party. He killed the other 3 members of his party in the subsequent fight. I think that was the last time we had that particular DM...

Personally, I feel that one falls more under Senseless Sacrifice territory, thus making it less Badass and just plain sad.

If Picard wasn't so stubborn about handling things personally, Data could have gone over himself, wiped out the enemy with his superior abilities, and set his phaser on a short timer next to the reactor, using the transporter device to save himself.

OT: Arvel Crynyd, the A-Wing pilot that brought down the Executor (Super Star Destroyer) at the Battle of Endor. Not only did that turn the tide for the starship battle, but badly wounded the Imperial navy for decades, as most of the best personnel had been assigned to the vessel for that particular battle.

I would probably say Baby Panay's death in Just Cause 2. Just take a look and see

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3wpnXxBt8o

In addition, I liked my character from a Shadowrun campaign we did. He took on an entire megacorporate army by holing up in a building and holding them off for several days with a sniper rifle. (It was a Garrus-esque setup for all of you Mass Effect 2 players out there. A respectful nod from the gamemaster), in order for the rest of the team to escape the soldiers. When I ran out of bullets for my sniper rifle, I used a pistol. When I'd run out of ammo, I kept fighting until I was cornered. Then I detonated the C-12 plastic explosive in the building, blowing me and my assailants sky high.

This. All the way.
Kickass game, kickass character, kickass death.
Moreover, the dude actually BECOMES AN IMMORTAL GOD, saves a planet and sways the mind of his whole race regarding the templars/dark templars feud. And kills what was basically Satan. And ends the game after an awesome mission.

That scene was, at the same time, powerful enough to have me shed tears and surprising enought so that no one saw it coming, which was what made it all the more heroic : the whole game had been (aside from Kerrigan) about people mainly commanding their armies from a safe location, and this guy showed us what a true general is all about : giving your life for your fellow soldiers and your friends, and even for those you hated.

I'm sorry, but Tassader's death even beats Jesus's.

By the way, for those who didn't notice, I'm kind of a Tassadar fanboy.

Way to go, Ser Imp, keep up the good fight.

En Taro Tassadar !

Spike, from Cow Boy BeeBop. His death was not only bad ass, but awesome enough to cause some manly men I know to well up a little. It also caused me to reconsider my stance on killing the lead in a series.
I don't think he's dead
No, they made it pretty damn clear that he died. Him falling, his star falling. It was metaphorically clear anyway.
Spike's fate at the end of the series is left open-ended. It is implied that Spike may have died from wounds sustained in his final duel with Vicious and the Red Dragons (the collapse, the fading star, the angelic choir). However, in an interview, Watanabe stated, "I've never officially said that he died. At this point, I can tell you that I'm not sure if he's alive or dead."

Those bastards! I love Spike! Seriously, first anime crush, very hot dude. They should have been more clear!
lol. I may have had a crush on spike as well, had i swung that way. :)

I would be enormously disappointed if they ever brought him back for something. It was a great ending and having him live after his crazy suicide mission, redemption, and peaceful death seems cheap.
Cowboy bebop had a wonderful sense of closure to it. I honestly don't see the point of using those charachters again, except maybe ein & Eduard

He gave his life for Allah Aiur like he always wanted, you filthy ninja.

Because as I interpret it, he never intended to carry out the orders, he just wanted to give Jim a reason to kill him because he'd rather die by Jim's hand than by Mengsk's.

Ehh, the name of the latest book made it pretty obvious he'd been dead. It was mainly not to spoil the how, since that's the actual spoiler for the entire point of the latest book.
My jaw dropped when I got to that part too... Chills... I had chills.
When I read that part my mind exploded.

That unnamed Space Marine at the end of the intro cinematic of the first Dawn of War. There are a few more along in that vein that I can't quite remember.

Boromir from Lord of the Rings. How many arrows did he take before he went down?

My level 12 Dwarf Fighter from AD&D 2nd edition

An arbolist bolt impaled him onto a sinking ship.

Talk about overkill.
D&D, a game where an epic death is not just a possibility, it is a inevitability.

Guy played a goliath fighter build for max hitpoints and AC. Encounter starts and within 4 turns he is down to single digit hp and has every enemy swarming him. Turns to the mages and says 'Just do it!'. Cue everyones strongest AOE attack centered on him. He died in a maelstrom of fire, acid, and more fire. We won the encounter but lost Gae-al the Goliath.

Anyways that was a lot better than my most recent character (new campaign), a paladin, who got killed 5 rounds in by a drunken sailor wielding a barstool and a mug. The DM forgot that these opponents had to make saves at the end of their turn to stay upright and they did crazy amounts of damage to compensate for this and keep the encounter challenging. Turned the encounter into a bloodbath.

OT: Ahmey, Tower of Druaga.
Pretty much the best fighter of the group and secondary team mom. When everyone gives up hope she goes and inflicts what would eventually become the mortal wound on the season 1 big bad, which is a giant praying mantis/human/dragon... thing. Gets mortally wounded herself and falls off of the 5 story tall beast.

I have to say that (incredible End of Evangelion spoilers all up in this shit)
Asuka's death was pretty goddamn badass, at least until the MP Evas went right ahead and cheated. She jumps out of a fucking lake with only 5 minutes of time left before the Eva powers down, throws a giant-ass boat at the JSSDF and then starts ripping them apart. Then the MP Evas show up and she proceeds to kill all of them in hers (all while Hideaki Anno plays unfitting music). They all then come back to life and spear her Eva through the eye with one of their Lance of Longinus remake things. Due to her 300% sync ratio (which is essentially 1:1 fusion with Unit 02), she's also been hit by a goddamn spear through the eye. Then she reaches up into the air saying "I'll kill you...I'll kill you...I'll kill you.". Admittedly, she is then hit by about five more of the Lances and then eaten alive, but it's a pretty badass way to go.
