Nobody has posted this yet? Shame.

I wish somebody would make a preacher game just so I could post this...

Mario. No, seriously, Mario is the most badass video game character ever. He jumps on his enemies so hard that he completely flattens them. Their bone structure actually just disintegrates under the mighty soles of Mario's shoes.

He can also leap lord knows how many feet in the air, and that's not including wall jumps.

He's also apparently had his molecular structure rearranged so that he could walk through walls, become a being of solid metal, have the ability to fly, and the ability to launch fire out of his palms at will on top of various other enhancements provided by picking up strange things.

To top it all off, he's damn near, if not entirely indestructible. Think about it, Mario has been shot, stabbed, lit on fire, thrown into lava, electrocuted, blown up, fallen from ridiculous heights, been eaten, crushed, kept underwater for lengths of time that would drown any normal person, can survive in the vacuum of space with no specialized equipment, has had hammers and boomerangs lodged in his skull, and he regularly slams his head into floating brick blocks to smash them and retrieve whatever may be inside. Not only is he still alive, he's gone and learned how to drive an arsenal toting go-kart as well as play various sports for shits and giggles.

Why can he do all these things? So he can save the princess of course. No other reason, no implied ulterior motives (although many are imagined), just so he can save the princess and bring peace to his home.

Mario is a badass.

I'm torn between Garrett from Thief

...

And Shianni from Dragon Age.

Garrett's fairly self explanatory. The guy has almost supernatural stealth powers - he has little combat training, and he goes up against gods and maniacs - and wins. Then he leaves with all their stuff.

Shianni might be a side character, but bear with me here.

She's a rape survivor, which on its own takes some intestines. From such an auspicious start, she makes a name for herself in the alienage community as someone who doesn't take shit. Despite being an underclass, she riles up the humans to no end - when the tevinter mages turn up to kidnap elves, instead of taking it, she causes more trouble, despite the fact that she is an elf of no particular skill and they fling fireballs. She goes looking for the biggest badass she can find - you, as it happens, and gets you to help out. The next time you meet her, she's all but running the show, and she's leading the entire alienage in the fight against a darkspawn invasion. Afterwards, she becomes elder and continues to rile up humans in the name of alienage freedom and respect.

Think about it for a second. Look at that character arc and tell me that you couldn't make a full on game of her actions. going around Denerim, organising a resistance, uniting the downtrodden elves before getting your revenge on the humans that are trying to stamp you down - organising a movement under the cover of darkness, gaining allies and friends and favours - before climactically rallying the alienage to save both themselves and massively assist in the defense of Denerim, forcing the humans to grant the elves at least a fleeting respect. It could be epic.

All that said... I think I might go with Shianni.

you forgot to add free source mods and skins...
Actually, I didn't. I just didn't want to fan the flames any further. That or come off as a fanboy myself. (probably too late for that, even though I enjoy both game series to a degree)

I feel compelled to add some other "badass" characters to my original two. (Bub and Bob)

So badass!

Chrono from Chrono Trigger. He traveled through time, collected enough swords to make Dante blush, gathered a group of die hard followers, came back from the dead and saved the world only to cause it to splinter into separate dimensions. All without saying a single word.

Well it's time for my awkward first post.
I'd have to say Kratos is the ultimate badass, killing Zeus, Aries, Poseidon, Hades, and screwing Aphrodite is pretty badass.
