I'm just curious since this is usually the first thing that draws me to a game. My personal favorite "beautiful" game is Okami, but I'm sure that one makes plenty of lists. What's your favorite? I want to find more!

Ah, that's a difficult one. I'll always say art direction is far more important than graphical fidelity, but sometimes both play a role. I'd say overall Journey is the most beautiful game I've played. It was just so colourful and alive, while at the same time being very lonely and empty at times. I loved it.

Others I'd note:

Shadow of the Colossus, Flower, FFXIII (whatever complaints you may have, it was pretty), several Prince of Persia games (including the 2008 one), the Uncharted series and I'd second Okami of course. :)

Ninja'd. Journey is by far the best looking game I've ever played, it's as if you are playing a beautiful painting, hopefully that makes sense to others. And you listed some of my other favorites as well.

I guess I should add at least one other game. And, the next game that comes to me is Bioshock Infinite, I loved the city of Columbia.

Trine 2 and Assassin's Creed 2. I think those games look marvelous. AC2 is not about the graphics as much as it's about the atmosphere. Especially in Venice.

The Last of Us. Environments in that game are freaking beautiful! The sun, lights, rain, the NATURE are so gorgeous, all of that culminating in that moment with giraffes.

Okami. Fuck me is that the way to properly use cell-shading. Every single screenshot from that game can be used as a wallpaper.

Persona 4:Golden. Models are simple, animations are crude, but holy shit is that game bright and colorful. That screenshot alone tells you everything!

Journey
Valkyria Chronicles
Bioshock 1, 2 & Infinite
Uncharted
Red Dead Redemption
Shadow of the Colossus

I'm unsure what your definition of beautiful is but in regards to these examples they're all games which I was able to appreciate apart from their specific gamey aspects, playing them. Often just by wandering around and admiring the view.

I will admit that good visuals are quite important to me when looking at games... That isn't to say that graphics are everything but I do think that appealing visuals and good art direction can go a long way.

Journey

The combination of the beautiful soft visuals, incredible score, and the smooth floating gameplay creates a unique dream-like experience. And the final level becomes something all together greater then that.

I am not surprised Journey is the most popular answer so far and I agree. The art style, level design, music and atmosphere are all beautiful.

It is one of very few games where you have co-op that is not only seamless but completely altruistic, there is no ability to hinder another player, and it can completely change the game for the better.

I also love the way you communicate in the game, and the way you have your own symbol when you "speak".

Shadow of the Colossus is also a very beautiful game in terms of set style, although much darker in tone. The human character models haven't aged well, but the Colossi still look amazing.

Do you mean beautiful graphically, or emotionally? If it's the former, then probably Far Cry 3. That sure is a fine looking game, and the tropical island setting fits the word beautiful to a T. If you're meaning the latter, well I don't really play "emotional" games, so I guess the most "beautiful" speaking along those lines would be one of the Mass Effects, I suppose.

Beyond two souls

Just play it, it's beautiful in every way. (Unless if you hate Ellen Page, or think good graphics are for shallow people)

EVE Online is amazing. I think 4-5 years ago I could definitely state it was the absolute leader in the visuals department, nowadays it's undergoing another visual overhaul (stations need to be redone) but overall it's an absolutely drop-dead-gorgeous MMO. It continues to be one of the most beautiful games ever made.

So, there's this game called Jour...

Oh come on!

Fine.

I'll give a nod to Mirror's Edge then. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I always adored the visuals in that game. So damn crisp and clean and clinical and contrasting and colourful.

Though to be fair that picture is from one of the prerendred cutscenes.

But yeah, The Last of Us looks pretty swanky. And it's because Naughty Dog tends to go hyper realism rather than photo realism. The setting looks very much grounded, yet everything feels that much more vibrant.

I would go with Proteus.
I'm not usually a fan of lo-fi art styles but there is something really beautiful about Proteus.

Other mentions go to:
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Borderlands
Mirrors Edge
Okami
Crysis

Edit:
Sleeping Dogs. Hong Kong is a beautiful place at night.
Bioshock Infinite; Columbia is a wonderful wonderful place to walk around. Probably why the first hour of the game was the best hour. (Except for the whole story reveal thing at the end)

Real life.

Sadly, the graphics is the only thing going for it.
Such a grind-fest... Terrible gameplay!

On a more serious note: I'd have to say The Wolf Among us. I know it just came out, but i just fell in love with the art style, especially the nighttime!

Mmm most of my top choices have already been said. I will add Farcry 3. Drop dead gorgeous game. Never has a killer animal infested island been so pretty.

Although not my favorite, it's still in my personal top 5 games, I think Legend of Mana deserves a mention. The backgrounds are all hand-drawn, and everything is fun to look at. You can take things at your own pace, so you're never timed to do anything. So you can take the time to absorb the atmosphere, which is set out to be childish and mystical from the art style and the musical score. A lot like a Myazaki film.
