Just picked up Bioshock 2, and that short walk through a field of coral near the beginning was wondrous.

Also, lots of Metroid Prime locales. Phendrana Drifts and Elysia come to mind.

any of the border systems in Freelancer.

how i loved to just fly through them, look at the giant ball of pixel-gas in the distance, and feel small, insignificant and puny - but in a reeeaaally good way =)
ah, those were the days...

Freelancer 2 pls? or Freelancer: Graphics Reloaded (but EVERYTHING else left untouched)?

oh, and Dantooine in SWG was pretty pretty too ^^

Rapture from bioshock, literally dripping with atmosphere (by which i mean water). And columbia (i think that's what infinite's city is called) looks set to be even more beautiful, without being as gloomy.
Going to have to go with this. :)

If they'd remake FFVIII I'd go with Balamb Garden. Mmmh I'll still go with it even though the graphics aren't the best compared to today's games....but then again the building design is amazing, someone should make a college that looks like that.

I liked the very bottom of Dantooine in the first KOTOR. It was either the Sandral or Matale estate, and you could stand at the egde of the cliff where the river flowed over the edge of it, looking at the sunset, the music was also really relaxing, and everything was red-tinged. It was beautiful.

Or the first Halo level that you get on the ring, where you run across the narrow bridge over the ravine, and the ring stretches below you, out into the distance and right above your head, it was prettt amazing to see.

I'm going to have to say that the first time I saw Rivendell in LOTRO at the highest res/settings I was really taken aback by it. There are certainly a lot of beautiful game locations out there though. Aphrodite's chamber in God of War 3, and the gardens outside of that leading up to it are also awesome designs.

Halo. I'm a sucker for all landscapes ridiculously huge and colourful. And you just can't beat those skyboxes.

Might have been mentioned, but the Spanish Blacklight place in Psychonauts is just amazingly stylized. Pretty much that whole game is.

There was this place, a camp, in the lands of Mania in Shivering Isles that had an incredible view of the ocean and of the sky. It was the first time in a game when I just stood for like fifteen minutes and watched the sunrise. I was captivated by the night sky at first and then the came the sunrise... just wow.

The view of the ocean in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2, just before Beach Cave.

Or anywhere in Okami. That whole game was just...yes.

I'm gonna pre-emptively say Columbia, in Bioshock: Infinite, even in the trailers it is just spectacular.

Red Dead Redemption (all of it is just epic), GTA4 just captured the vibrancy of the city so well and Oblivion of course, in particular a mod which hasn't been mentioned - Nehrim. The first view of the world after stepping out of the prologue cave is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring moments I've seen in a game.

I love Oblivion, in no other game have I ever based my character soley on their ability to run around the world just to stare at the landscape.
