I was tempted to go with a simple

<-

But I'll just tell you to look at my Avatar, and it's not the pissy movie version either.

In a game though? I guess recently Granny Rags was the only one which got my attention... Didn't play Farcry 3 yet but it seems Vaas is a contender.

There are plenty... but since I watched the anime a couple months ago, I think I'll have to go with Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

She watches her friend, Madoka, die and sacrifices her "life" to become a Puella Magi in order to save her. She gains the ability to reset time and goes back to when she'd first met Madoka in an effort to either prevent her from becoming a Puella Magi or simply to save her life.

She fails.

Over and over and over and over and over and over and over she fails and watches her friends die.

And when she finally "succeeds", Madoka becomes a being that transcends time and space, and is therefore forever beyond Homura's reach.

Talk about fucked up. :/

I loved Ladd Russo from Baccano! In a series that focuses on immortals in the early 20th century, it says something when the most interesting character is a mortal man who is just batshit insane.
Heh, people have found it odd that I think Ladd was much more entertaining than the comic-relief duo.

What about Misa?

Poor girl... Parents murdered in front of her, dragged off the streets and held hostage for Celestia knows how long, falls in love with a man who couldn't give less of a shit about her... I could go on.

I think she's earned the right to be insane.
Being a ditz was less justified.

Without a doubt, the best two twisted characters and two of my all time favourite villains, hands down, The Joker (movie and games) from Batman and Vaas from Far Cry 3. Both are fantastically insane. Can't get enough of either.

I agree with Vaas from Far Cry 3, but people seem to overlook Jason, the main character.

He watches his brother die, is forced to take multiple drugs, has to deal with Vaas, Buck, and Hoyt. He starts to enjoy murdering people when he's saving his girlfriend; he gets so absorbed into the culture of the Rakyat that he believes he is one of them, almost abandoning his friends. He tortures his younger brother, who he has been trying to save throughout the whole game, and watches numerous people he loves die in front of him. He is forced to either kill his friends (who he's been trying to save), or abandon his tribe.

And after all this, he realizes that he is a monster, and that he may not be able to come back from all the murders and atrocities he has committed.
At any rate, all of the characters from FC3 are wonderfully written, and gloriously fucked in the head. That game has, by far, told one of the best stories in gaming, and it is my pleasure to have been able to witness it.

I gotta say the best decent into madness with a character iv ever seen is Light from Death Note. At the beginning you know its a bad idea and never gonna work but he is so perfectly awesome you just have to root for him. But the longer it goes on you can just see him slip from his perceived righteous path onto one of complete and total insanity. Plus it is amazing how ridiculously amazing the story gets off of the premise that there is a notebook that if you write someones name in it they die. Honestly the first time i watched it, it was late and i was half falling asleep while watching adult swim, which is the only reason i didn't change the channel, and all i could think at the start is the the whole idea was stupid, but dam dos it get amazing.

I'll one-up Vaas votes, second the motion that Jason is fairly fucked up as well, and raise the group Gorgeous Gary Golden, from Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

He's a former Hollywood Silver Screen star who's lost it all because of the Nosferatu's tendency to privilege ironically fitting Embraces. As a result, he's still exceedingly bitter two mortal generations after his death and never fails to land deprecating remarks at the player, if you your choice of avatar is in the Toreador clan. They're essentially the antithesis of the Nosferatu. One's your average Max Schreck rat-faced fugly, the other one is somewhere along Anne Rice's concepts for vampires.

A lot of Coteries (player-character parties during pen-and-paper sessions) can mostly get along even with Nossies and Torries sharing space. Prejudices aren't things that any given player is obligated to roleplay. Even so, the rule of thumb is that you shouldn't be afraid to slander your pointy-eared peers, because they'll do it right back.

Plus, well, spend a couple decades in an excavated chamber underneath Hollywood's celeb cemetary and the borough's transit system... You're liable to turn a little batty over time.

Rorscharch is fucking great. It's ironic that, in the sense of the story, he's really the only sane person. His uncomprimising stance is also really admirable.

I took a pic of one of the panels, wherein he's flashing his awesomeness:

The Driver from Drive.

And in a similar vein, John McClane. I guess I just have a thing for "wrong place at the right time" stuff. I don't know why, people forced to do incredible things gets me. But in movies, I prefer those things be gunfights. Yeah. Gunfights.

...though I'm having a bit of trouble. I know for sure there's someone that gets turned into a robot who is really sympathetic, but all I can think of is Adam Jensen and it's not him I'm thinking of. Eh, I've always like Six Million Dollar Man situations, too. One of the only things I like about the Matthew Broderick Inspector Gadget film is him getting sad because he's been turned into a crappy robot man. Darth Vader, similar. I can't put my finger on it though. I like people being put into, like, android shells, though. And then trying to cry cos they can't touch things with their own fingers anymore. And then not being able to cry. An- ...geez. I'm a bastard.

Jack is a pretty good answer, mainly because she STOPS being a psycho.

I can't really think of anyone else that hasn't already been said over and over, so all I got left is a fan fiction character I created once, Sukron. Out of the gate I never pretended that he was anything other than a psychopath with a fetish for things getting set on fire and cutting them with knives. He also had a torture fetish and it was fun having two of my other characters to escape his grasp and have him go completely nuts about it, spending the next year hunting them down. That an other things but I've rambled enough.

I don't know. She has had a screwed up life, but she is fairly well adjusted considering. In the end (last episode) she seems relatively happy after meeting Madoka's younger brother. Obviously she is not "happy" with what happened, but she doesn't appear to be screwed up herself.

I do love that anime, especially as I wasn't expecting it to be anything like it was.

Characters that has already been mentioned that I agree with; Jack from Mass Effect. Rorschach. Fuminori and Saya. PC from Saints Row 2. Ladd Russo. Rand Al'thor

They're all interesting and beautifully fucked up.

I would also like to add Roberta from Black Lagoon, psycho maid which almost comes of like a terminator.

The forsaken from Wheel of time, especially Semirhage who is probably my favorite fucked up character. It was years ago since I last read the books, and I'm waiting to read the last two until the final is released, but I still clearly remember her XD She's fucking crazy and sadistic as all hell.

<spoiler=Spoilers>
She used to be the greatest healer, but inflicted pain on her patients and even murdered those who she thought unfitting of life. When they found out about it, she got mad because they thought more of common people than her and joined the dark side.

Semirhage got power under the dark one
"During the War of Power, territories governed by Semirhage were often marked by terrible cruelty - even compared to territories governed by other Chosen. She forced people in cities to help torture each other. She used this in her studies about breaking people using pain, and experimented on ways to kill, such as replacing people's blood with various foreign substances.

Semirhage used this sinister knowledge on those who had - in her eyes - made her turn to the Shadow, and was filled with enormous satisfaction for each one of those from Hall of Servants who had thought they could judge her, as each swore their loyalty to the Dark One.

She became widely known as the Lady of Pain. So horrific and widespread was her reputation that people were known to bite through their own wrists rather than face her. In fact, special precautions had to be taken to keep prisoners from committing suicide when learning they were to be handed over to Semirhage"

Semirhage discovered the technique where thirteen Dreadlords and thirteen Myrddraal could turn any channeler against their will to the Shadow. However, her preferred method of turning a person to serve the Shadow remained torturing the subjects into swearing allegiance to the Dark One. In addition to her pure enjoyment in inflicting excruciating agony, she thought that painful and perverse punishment is more effective - despite being more time-consuming.

Semirhage also headed a network within lands under the Shadow to root out traitors and spies who followed the Light, and she was extremely effective in that role. There was a time during the War that Semirhage was captured, but she frightened her guards so much that they smuggled her out of captivity."

And much later when she gets captured by the main character, she doesn't answer their questions but talks about torture techniques and how she used to treat her prisoners.

"No, you're doing it wrong, this is how you should be torturing me." XD

I love her.

So yeah, I'm gonna chose Semirhage as the most beautifully fucked up character I've seen.

Vaas from Far Cry 3. Sure, he's a mass-murdering psychopath, but you gotta wonder, why does he act like that? Maybe he's just sad, maybe he just wanted a friend... Or maybe he's just like that cause he's like that.

The entire cast of Neon Genesis Evangelion, of course. Sure, giant robots and conspiracies are one thing, but it would not have been anywhere near as iconic (or incomprehensible) if the characters had their shit together,

Just off the top of my head:

Desire, from the Sandman. In his/her own way, much more fucked up than even Delirium.

President Gary Callahan, aka the Smiler from Transmetropolitan. "Yes, General, I am masturbating into the American flag. It relaxes me. Would you rather I use you?"

Doktor Sleepless from, well, Doktor Sleepless. "Future Science Jesus" my ass.
