Most competent AI teammates you've seen in a game.

So I picked up Freespace 2 a few months ago and I was utterly amazed at how relatively competent your wingmen can be (I say relatively, because the AI still messes up on things like taking out the enemy's weapons systems). Your wingmen can take out enemy fighters tailing you, intercept enemy bombing runs, and take out capital ships while you're taking care of something else.

All in all, it was really refreshing from being the usual "one man army" in video games or as I like to call it "Ramirez Syndrome," and this game was released in 1999.

What other games have you had where AI teammates could actually complete mission objectives on their own without making the game too easy?

Well, I'm not here to talk about AI teammates in particular, but I've heard the enemy AI of F.E.A.R. 3 is really agressive and everything(mysef not adding much more to that because I didn't play enough through the game to be able to judge it).

Oh yeah, I think I should say that the AI of Battlefield 3 is mildly decent as well, but it's not like anyone cares about the AI when you've got a game as intense as Battlefield 3. If that game were a person, then upon meeting you, it would find a lead pipe and beat you to unconsciousness with it. Then it would let you regain consciousness, get up, and then it would knock you out again.

You all fail to recognize the tactical competence of Delta Squad buddies. Sev, snipe that fool's head off while Fixer and I cover Scorch as he sets the demo charge.

Well, as you said, Freespace 2. Damn that game's amazing...

As for me, well Alyx from Half Life 2 Episode 1. Valve did a damn good job with her.

Also you're squadmates from Mass Effect 1/2. They aren't really that great, but at least they duck when you aim in their direction. Which, really, is what SO MANY MORE allies need to start doing.

Payday the Heist. While they are kind of derps when it comes to following you, when in a room they take down anything you need done. Sure they are aimbots, but hey, they are on my team.

I'd have to say as far as competency goes, the A.I. team mates from Star Wars: Republic Commando are by and far better than any others I've ever seen. Seriously, I've yet to play another game (never played this "Freespace") where I could give my entire team very specific orders, and they proceed to carry out those orders without staring at me confused-like or getting stuck on walls, objects, each other, ect. *Proceeds to glare angrily at Mass Effect 2.*

Gears 3 squad mates seemed more useful this time round. Then again, considering how much harder the game got, it's seems like a bit of a double edged sword...

I know there is a FPS I played which had some really good team mates who drew fire away from you and weren't entirely usless. I think it was rainbow six vegas, but they required directing. Still were pretty good though in comparrison to the invunrable or endless waves of soldiers seen in COD or Battlefield though.

I thought the AI in Killzone 2's Skirmish mode played pretty well, at least, when you set them to any ranking above 'recruit', they were (which is fair enough, I suppose).

I dunno if it was a bug or something but i had the mechanic ghoul guy as a partner in fallout new vegas and he did nothing but spam repeated head shots at anything remotely threatening to me

problem is that if team mate AI is as good as it should be - you as the player wont have to do much at all.

Resident Evil 4. Ashley was never once a nuisance for me. She ducked when I was aiming in her direction, she yelled "behind you!" when an enemy was on your back, she could hide in boxes while I was kicking ass, and best of all: She never used up all of my herbs. I'm looking at you, Sheva!

I aggree with you completly, even if i did complete the game rediculously quickly, im pretty sure it was because the AI was actually good.

Mass Effect 2's squad mates had their moments....admitedly few and far between but they had them.

Personaly i liked the AI from SWAT 4...that is when they wern't getting stuck on doorways due to pathway issues. :/

Payday actually has some pretty shit AI. Their programming consists of 'Stand near player and kill everything'. Which is extremely useful, yes, but it isn't good AI. They're just extremely aggressive aimbots with infinite ammo and metric fucktons of health.

Edit: Also, 'Help player up when downed' is their primary objective. Which means that they won't take out whatever killed you. So if it's a Bulldozer, Sniper, Taser, or Cloaker...well...yeah. Enjoy your team getting wiped.

None. Either they are too good and keep stealing your kills or they suck and get you killed. Take GOW3 for example. You don't really have to use to many of your own bullets playing it on normal. Just dive into cover and the AI will do the rest. It is a whole new genre, STPS for people who broke the triggers on their controller

She also had the f***ing decency to tell you when she needed help.
