As video games get more sophisticated, the story writing becomes more and more important. We've constantly praised the good, and hounded on the terrible. However, good or bad, there are some stories that are sometimes difficult to sort out.

My nomination for the most confusing story is Street Fighter. With multiple branches due to the amount of characters involved, it is so difficult to figure out which dialogued fights actually occurred that Capcom has to release official statements saying which fights occurred and which didn't, and who won those fights.

How about the rest of the Escapist? Which stories (good or bad) confused you guys the most?

I gotta say the Halo series. Not counting Halo Wars, still haven't gotten far enough into it to see if I'm gonna get confused.

Metal Gear series I felt got a little confusing at times. There were complete WTF moments and then there were huge chunks of story that lacked any sort of subtlety what so ever...which I hated.

I hate to admit it but FF VII.
I will never understand why people think it's confusing...

Me either. FFXII is MUCH worse. Might help if I actually cared about any of the characters. Somtimes I think they may just all be reincarnations of characters from older FF games.

Edit: I thought MGS had a solid story (forgive the pun) until it started to go all meta-physical and abstract in MGS2. I sorta followed it, but the story really is the result of a gaming auteur gone totally mad.

Resident Evil hands down.

My friend 'claims' to understand it, but i think he must be lying. No one can understand that crap. They are fun games to play, just have a shitty plot

The time traveling, the psychic supermen, the fact that the first two game never happened in the story line now. and with CnC, How Kain seems to be Cain from the bible, Tiberium is some kinda alien weapon, a SHODAN rip off AI.

Never mind in the first CnC RA, Kain seemed to be Stalin's adviser.

Oh I understood like 95% of it, the rest was probably me not paying much attention as that is the ONLY time I ever get confused by game stories. My main gripe with that games story was what I mentioned earlier, I lacks subtlety and that downright pisses me off when the player is spoon fed most of the shit and required little thought process. And that spoon feeding leads to me turning off my brain and missing that 5% lol.
