I was nearly kicked out of school for having this in my bag when I went to a game (I'm in the marching band).

By the gods, I might mildly annoy up to six people!

In 2nd grade I found a small hollow plastic nub that was kinda "cool" at the time because due to its shape and coloring it kind of looked like a bullet (or more appropriately a very small artillery shell} and I wanted to do something fun with it like may a WWII diorama or something. I was in second grade and a huge war nerd.

One of my fellow students thought it was a real bullet and told the teacher, she confiscated it and gave me a week of detentions for bringing in a live bullet. Mind you this was in the 80's so well before Columbine and all that in a small rural community of 400 people. No one but 1 kid and 1 teacher thought it was a bullet.

Ive never gotten in "Trouble" with like an authority, but i was asked to leave a shop a couple weeks ago.

I open carry a handgun, specifically an Ed Brown Kobra Carry 1911, and i had worn it into a shop. Which, i might add, is completely legal here, and i was doing nothing illegally. However, by law, if a private shop owner requests, you must leave the premises.

Thankfully, the shop owner just asked if i could leave my sidearm in the car, which i did.

In other places, ive had people threaten to call the cops and so on. Generally, they're told that i am within my rights. I have had an officer question me and ask to see my ID (not required to have a permit here). They were very polite and thanked my for my cooperation. Although some people would refuse, as carrying a handgun in a holster, and not doing anything with it, is NOT a threatening situation and technically the cops have no right to question you about it. Personally, id rather just get things done quietly and politely when dealing with the law.
Why would you want to openly carry a handgun anyway?
Because i believe that shit can happen, and that i cant tell when or where that might happen, and that being prepared is better than being helpless. I carry open because concealing a handgun can be hard, especially as a woman. Its also a great detterent in its own right. What criminal is going to mug you, when they can clearly see a handgun on you?

I -may- have tried to take a rubber tomahawk onto a plane when I was in America, got a full security search and a thorough talking to. Apparently they thought a 4 year old armed with something roughly as sharp and rigid as an eraser was going to hijack a plane. This was in 1998.

Once in middle school the strap for my messenger bag broke, so I spent the rest of the day wearing it as a makeshift tie until I could take it home and fix it. Or, that's what I would've done, had some teacher not accosted me for having something resembling a noose and took it.
I mean, students carry with them pencils, pens, and heavy, blunt text books. If I wanted to kill someone, I'd have done so using those, not strangling someone. That's such a noisy way to die. And if I wasn't averse to strangulation, I also have hands.

I brought a Kangaroo Hide Whip to school once in year 7 and was cracking it, showing my friends, and it got confiscated and taken to my mother who worked at the canteen because its a weapon apparently... Ive been cracking whips since I was like 5... I also always carry a pocket knife with me which is illegal around here. Oh, and when I traveled to London, I wanted to go on the London Eye, but I had a Swiss Army knife on me, so I couldn't get past the metal detectors

Shit can happen ergo the best solution is to be ready to murder someone by filling them with lead? OK so I can see how it works as a deterrent but, at the risk of sounding like a douche bag hippie, I reckon guns cause an awful lot more problems than they solve. If your walking down a street and you see some stranger openly displaying a gun, does that make you feel safe or nervous?
Do you think, a criminal will be openly carrying a weapon on them? Does that make sense? Full view of the public, means police officers, and citizens, if youre going to commit a crime, would you walk around with a gun openly displayed? Probably not.

And it makes me feel safe, it makes me feel safe that someone else has carried their own sidearm in the event that something DOES go wrong, that they're prepared to defend not only their life, but the lives of those around them.

And if someone threatens my life, and i do mean threatens my life, not acts an idiot in public, than hell yes, i will kill to protect myself, my family and those around me who cannot protect themselves. My philosophy on carry is this: if ive had to draw my weapon, then i mean to shoot to kill. It means that ive exhausted all other means of protecting myself, including running from the attacker. So, no, im not a murderer, but im prepared to defend my life, if given no other option.

That wasn't really my point, I mean obviously a lot of people have guns ad only a few are criminals. It's just I've never had someone walk towards me with a gun at his hip and one "Man I'm glad he has that, I feel really safe now."

It's more "Shit why does he has a gun, is something bad gonna happen?"
can you say it wont? Things happen, when and where you least expect it, end of story. Yes, chances are, in a middle class neighborhood, things arent going to go nuts, but it doesnt mean things dont go wrong. I remember when i was in middle school, in a nice neighborhood, in a nice part of my home state, a retired man, around the corner from my friends house, went nuts and took his wife hostage with a shotgun. A convinence store, again, in a nice area, was robbed at gunpoint. Id prefer to know that there is someone there, who might intervene, if something goes wrong.

Back in high school, I would often bring a combat knife to school with me... I didn't flaunt it, and so I never got in trouble for it. Ah, the good old days.
Ooh, I've also carried an M-4 and an M-249 on two separate commercial airliners, after the ridiculous post-9/11 security hikes. I didn't have any rounds for 'em at the time, but they were definitely assault weapons.

...I've never actually gotten in trouble for possessing weapons, despite doing so from about age 10 up to now. What can I say? My governments like me.

I made a taser from a Barbecue lighter. The piezoelectric ones, basically it had run out of butane so I connected the wires to two metal wires out in front. It produces a small static shock (well a couple hundred volts but that's static for you) and I took it to school to zap my friends. One guy borrowed it to zap someone else and a teacher saw. I didn't get in trouble as he was holding it and took the blame but I didn't get it back as it was a 'weapon' that could harm someone about as much as you touching them after going down a slide.
