This whole album by Tom Waits is oppressively dark and saddening.

From movies, to video games, and music

Seriously? No-one has brought this one up? Huh, well, guess I can. The song I play when I want to feel pretty down.

That song isn't necessarily "depressing", at least not for me. For me it invokes more of a sense of creeping dread. Like some form of sinister darkness is inching ever closer, preparing to strike.

From OFF.

So yeah, whatever. [video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MuygMqV8eE[/video]

The song plays when you are fighting the real final boss, The Queen (of Oz?) after effectively destroying the false civilisation that she has surrounder herself and her maker with (also your maker) who she has adopted her son, in order to give themselves a fake comfort after the world ends. Of course, the protagonist - being the only sane character in the game - decided to put an end to the fakeness. Incase it doesn't work, it's called "The reason for his tears" or something.

Seeing as how the game's soundtrack is mostly battle music, which is upbeat, sporadic and ragtime-y with no hints of apathy that the game actually has... ok, except for one.
[video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BknzL4UNTnk[/video]
Those things? They're ordinary people. There's another one but I can't find it.. it's like the main battle song... no, it is the main battle song. Except the volume is doubled and all the sounds are percussion, and it plays in the same area. I shit myself. Incase it doesn't work, it's called endless hallway. It's also similiar to Fake Orchestra, another boss theme.

.flow is a weird one.

No matter which fan interpretation you subscribe to, each one is more horrible than the last. The game is basically nothing but a series of scary, depressing and oppressively lonely moments strung together with little rhyme or reason. And occasionally, something really terrible happens and Sabitsuki will wake up coughing blood.

Of the Yume Nikki "series", it's by far the most bad-feels-y. Not recommended if you're really emotional.

DeVotchKa, who has songs licensed by Epic Games and Valve for Gears of War and Left for Dead, respectively, is deliciously dark and depressing. Hell, anyone who has had a song licensed by Epic for one of the prerendered Gears trailers gets on that list for me. Mazzy Star, Sun Kil Moon, and Gary Jules.

Why hasn't anyone of you mentioned Kafka yet? I mean some of these things are sad but if you read Kafka you need to do so in the summer and take regular hourly breaks to look at the sun to stave of depression. If you haven't read The Castle or Der Prozess yet and you enjoy being sad sometimes then do so (Sorry if I sound pretentious).

Melancholy music? Look no further than Gary Jules' cover of Mad World originally by Tear for Fears.

Part of what made it so great was this is the first time you're introduced to these characters, and within the first minute they're already ridiculously well characterized. Plus, the tone is entirely different than the rest of the game, which is normally a very goofy rhythm game with silly characters and outrageous scenarios. This caught me so off guard.

I read somewhere that Kafka used to become enraged if, when reading his works to others, that at least one person wasn't laughing.

Doesn't seem likely, but I like to believe it.

I 'unno, personally I don't find that sort of fiction (loosely linked to Sarte/Camus/Dostoyevsky) depressing, there's a certain element of the absurd that I really, really enjoy.

Also, Nausea (Sartre) has the immortal line, "My tits, my lovely fruits.". Notes From Underground (Dostoyevsky) has a man travelling across a city to slap some guy in the face, and debating whether or not it'd be worth it. Hell, even Metamorphosis has an opening concept that can be slanted as amusing (Man wakes up, Man is beetle).

I rounded up a variety of things from different mediums. I appreciate these various works and believe they all have merit, but I know full well they're not for everyone. Just know yourself and your personal thresholds when exploring these video links - I've compiled some interesting material, but it's not feel good stuff.

MIA - Born Free (Music Video)
Irreversible "Confronting Le Tania" Scene (Film) apologies for poor quality video
Justice - Stress (Music Video)
NON - Disneyland Can Wait (Music, Fan Video)
Suicide - Frankie Teardrop (Music, Lyrics)
Skinny Puppy - Reclamation (Music to accompanying TDP Tour Backing Film)
SPK - Post Mortem (Music, Fan Video)
Zoetrope (Short Film, Trailer, Kafka adaptation)
Krokidil Tears (Documentary, Vice Magazine)
Antichrist (Film, Trailer)

Wasn't going to post initially, since I don't watch that kind of stuff, but then I remembered this music video

It's by the finnish band Zen Café, the song name translates to "Yard without a sprinkler". It's about a guy going through a depression after his girlfriend has left him, and that video speaks for itself I believe.

Also, If you don't find the characters in Evangelion either selfish assholes or insufferable whining pussies, it's absolutely devastating, especially the grandmother of all mindfucks that is End of Evangelion.

captcha: it doesn't count. You're right, for me it doesn't, because I'm not a pretentious 15-year old who thinks blasting the audience with Judeo-Christian imagery and psychedelic gibberish is the pinnacle of art and philosophy. Suck it, Eva fanboys.

Fantastic list and instant Add to Friends for being a Neurosis/Cult of Luna/Opeth fan! I'll continue a bit; although I'm at work so don't have sound on this PC to check the quality of the videos.

Major props to a band like CoL for using a banjo in their music like this. Somewhere along the Highway is a fabulous album about loneliness.

Next up a track from Opeth's third album My Arms, Your Hearse. Opeth's first concept album, following a story (here copy-pasted from Wikipedia to save time):
"The album concerns a character who dies and becomes a ghost. The narrative on the ghost's existence revolves around the woman he loved. Frustration and suspicion make the character restless as he watches his loved one after his death, his soul in constant turmoil as he does not believe that she genuinely grieved his passing. Though his ghost's actual presence remains undetected, she feels a great sadness, and remains unwilling to accept his death."

Each song bleeds into the next, with the last word or phrase of each song being the title of the next. The album also follows a seasonal theme, moving from spring, through summer and autumn, into winter.
From nearing the end of the album, two songs:

Opeth at near their heaviest, into Opeth at near their most gentle; the story continues.

Glad you liked it, I'm so honored to meet someone with some similar taste :)

How could I not even think about mentioning Somewhere Along the Highway? That album is some cold lonely stuff. [sub][sub]..I much prefer Salvation though.[sub][sub]JUST LEAVE ME HERRRRRRRRE[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

I lose it when that guitar comes in at around 2:04. Phenomenal.

That guitar line in Credence that starts at 4:20 used to always get stuck in my head and I just couldn't put my finger on where it was from until I listened to MA,YH a few weeks ago, great stuff.

This song used to hit me hard when I was in a rough place. Excellent lyrics and instrumentation.
A song about the death of the drummers sister including vocals from Neurosis' Scott Kelly and the bands drummer himself, Brann Dailor. Chorus just sounds so desperate and great overall.
More Opeth!
An unfamiliar land, alone, beauty..hope? All atmosphere here baby.
A nice mellow track it just makes me feel down.
Yes, more deftones.
Instrumentals that just give you the feel and the vocals that punch your heart.
We've all been at this point :/
The vocals just drag you through his emotions.
