So, yeah, title says it all really. What is the hardest, most difficult or time consuming task you have endeavoured to do in a video game?

Personally, the first thing that comes to mind is doing Halo Reach on Mythic. Don't know what Mythic is? Legendary difficult with every skull on. Its challenging, freaking hard, and incredibly fun. It's also incredibly frustrating. I spent over an hour, possibly two, doing one mission. Got quite near the end, and I get blindsided by an Elite with a Concussion Rifle. One hit kill. All because my stupid AI teammate refused to move up.

So, yeah. I ask you, Escapians, what is the most challenging challenge you have challenged yourself with? [sub] challenge! [/sub]

Play through Demons Souls. I'll do it when I have time, this summer vacation hopefully.

Hmmmmm.

I cleared everything except the Mysterious Figure (absolutely impossible) in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on critical mode at level 1 without learning Second Chance.
Which is funny, because Kingdom Hearts games are an absolute joke on difficulty normally.

I've also done solo runs of most of my favorite RPGs, but those never turn out THAT hard. FFV was probably the most difficult.

I did a Chrono Trigger low level run, but it was mostly difficult because of luck more than anything else.

Beating Macgruder at the end of Gun. It took me 20 or 30 tries before I figured out that guns don't hurt him and dynamite gets rid of maybe one twentieth of his health. Then I figured out why I kept getting instakilled while standing over the gold heat vents. Thank goodness for dynamite bows.

Most recently... I dunno. I suppose playing through Dead Space (the original) on the hardest difficulty with only the Plasma Cutter. This was also on my first playthrough so I didn't know what was going to be coming. Did pretty well and beat the game... and then found out there was an even more difficult difficulty.... *sighs*

I would also say playing through New Vegas on Hardcore, but really as long as you keep a few Hydras, Atomic Cocktails, RadAway, and Gecko Steaks on you, you're pretty much set.

I think I need to challenge myself more... :p

I once tried to play the original Halo, but hacked with a "one shot, one kill" rule for both sides. Oh man, did I die alot...

Attempted plying through Half Life but bypassing every health and suit recharge station. Yeah, I didn't get too far.

Get a nuke only using a pistol on MW2 without camping? Hells yes with the M9! No modded controller either. I play legit.

But once my computer is brought back from the dead with upgrades, I shall restart my journey to get into Gold in Starcraft 2...even though I suck.

Let's see, playing Diablo 2 on Nightmare difficulty using only lightning spells as a sorceress. Duriel was 10x harder than he should have been because of that. Had to switch to lightning and ice at the beginning of the fourth act because there were enemies that were immune to lightning. And now I'm on Hell difficulty where enemies are both immune to cold and sometimes lightning.

I couldn't complete the demo, so I'm not likely to buy the full game. It crippled me, I nearly had a heart attack in the water bit.

Earning Medallion of the Imperial psychopath on Napoleon Total War, on Very hard/very hard.

For those, who don't know, you earn the medallion by declaring war on everyone (i.e the whole of Europe)in the first turn, never negotiating peace, and winning. I set victory conditions to be conquering most of Europe. (long campaign)

I did not win. The combined Spanish, French and Russian assault on Marseilles made sure of that.

So I did it on normal instead. The whole war thing barely inconvenienced me. : )

Most time-consuming is an easy answer: getting the Loremaster title in World of Warcraft (WotLK era). Well, figuring out what to do afterwards was probably more time-wasting but the lack of a goal excludes it from being an actual challenge. Oddly enough, completing the vast majority of the soloable content in WoW was an entertaining experience.... but also removed the veil of "entertainment" the genre is founded upon and eventually leading to my disdain for it. Fun while it lasted, but so utterly dependent on the players deluding themselves that the repetitive grind is fun. Not a particularly hard challenge, so I'll have to find something else for that.

Hmm... there's not a lot I can particularly think of, as I usually don't play games solely for the sake of challenge as much as I do for entertainment. "Hard" is too synomonous with "frustrating" for me, and on the rare occasions I ever bother to crank up the difficulty I get nowhere after a very brief while. Usually it's because not that I can't accomplish the initial objectives, but because I can't find the personal motivation needed to do anything beyond that. It's just not fun.

I create plenty of out-of-context challenges for myself, and they can be difficult at times. Breaking certain aspects of a game, exploring some random corner of the map (or all of it), building absurd maps using the level editor... but is it's seldom driven by a need to excel at a game as it is to simply try (or find) something new.

Well now I am playing through the game and let's just say that my girlfriend forbade me to play it in her presence saying something in the lines that I shall stop screaming like a little girl in front of her :D

Contra 4 on hard. It was totally worth it.

That or getting a gold medal for time attack on the "tidal terror" stage in Donkey Kong Country returns. I started at 9 'o clock and ended 4 and a half hours later at 1:30 in the night. It was frustrating and my wrist and elbow hurt like hell thanks to the damn motion controls. I hate motion controls now, they make the game unnecesarily hard. Worst of all, I didn't even get a shiny medal! It wasn't worth it, but I just couldn't help myself, I couldn't give up now that I already started, couldn't let the game win.
