The Etrian Odyssey games hands down, specifically Etrian Odyssey 2. The fights are cruel and brutal and I can't hardly get past the first couple of levels. Your party doesn't level at a speed comparable to the you advance through the levels, and miniscule side quest baddies'll wipe the floor with you. It laugh at difficulty curves and goes straight to post endgame draconian balancing right off the bat.
And yet I played for hours...hoping...begging...trying.

Im going to have to second Super Ghouls and ghosts. I think the farthest Iv ever got to on the game was the... well either the twin towers part or the lava dungeon. not sure which was farther...but that game makes me want to break my SNES controller. Almost as bad as Ken Griffy presents MLB for SNES. I swear i was up 12 to 2 with the Cardinals vs. the Cubs and they came back in the 8th and beat me 17 to 12. all in one inning! that game was shit.

That gets much easier with the right party, specially war mage and hexer.

I'd say Touhou Subterrainian Animism - take all the gimmicky bosses with very annoying spell cards from stages 5, 6 and extra from the other games then put them in every stage of a game. Also the stages themselves aren't especially easy for a Touhou game.

I Wanna Be The Fangame is another competitor, IWBTG apparently wasn't hard or frustrating enough for whoever made this so they modded the difficulty up.

Nethack is my obvious choice, I've played that game on and off for at least a year and only just managed to ascend a single character. There are more cheap deaths in that game than IWBTG and there are no save points.

Super Meat Boy. Duh.

I love platformers and all, but that's just ridiculous. The game is designed for frustration. And you have to get the bandages, etc.

Damn tough.

Super Meat Boy.

Mass Effect 2... on Insanity.

I would say Demon's Souls, but ti's not actually that hard if you're careful. Unless some jerk on their 900th playthrough decides to invade your world. Then you're screwed.

Call of Duty: World at War on Veteran. Maybe it was just because I was fairly new to shooters when I picked up world at war, but certain levels of that game made me rage like never before. Then again, I thought the same thing about Cod Classic when I played it on hardened, but I found the Veteran campaing to actually be easier on that game. I suppose it's a combination of difficulty and experience that made it seem so rage-inducing

i dont know about entire games that were difficult, but i do remember a few bosses or levels that caused me to break controllers in frustration.

i remember that Prototype, while a decent game, had a difficulty curve like a roller coaster. there were portions of the game that were extremely easy and there were others that made me want to fling my controller into the tv. i never even finished the game because of how ridiculous the final boss was. you have about 3 min to kill him before a nuke goes off. however, he had a TON of health, could regenerate his health, and could hit you from all the way across the map with an attack that drained almost all of your health.

another one was from my favorite game: Kingdom Hearts 2. i think the dude's name was Demix or Demyx of something like that (i remember him as guitar guy). he attacked you with these water attacks that took the form of either music notes or water clones that turned into music notes. i actually broke a controller playing that level (then beat him with my spare controller after i loaded a checkpoint).

If we're looking past broken controls and unfair deaths, SMB is far and away the hardest platformer I've ever played. Of course it's also one of the best.

I wanna be the guy isn't hard , in the sense it's challenging, it's hard in the sense it's trial and error / timing / dumb luck , i don't think that counts , and if it does count it's cheating.
The platforming parts of IWBTG are still challenging, especially since some require fairly well timed movements (the Kirby wall chase and the Ghouls and Ghosts sections spring to mind, but stuff like the Guy's Castle is fairly stiff too), but I agree that (relative to some of the other games here like SMB and Demon's Souls) IWBTG is actually not too bad. The "legendary" difficulty obviously comes from all the unfair deaths that happen - these will certainly kill you first time but probably not after that.

If I play every level of SMB again I'd die a lot more often than I do when I try and go through IWBTG again.

It's designed for perfection =p

SMB is now my gold standard for platform precision, I have trouble going back to sloppy controls.

and yes I HAVE to get all the bandages >.<
