Metroid: Other M ... people have complained about it to death but for good reason. One thing people seem to miss about the story is, even if by some miracle it had turned out to be the best story ever written it still would have ruined the game since that style of story telling is not suited for Metroid.

The best way to explain this point is to look at what is the most important aspect of the series discovery: pretty much with the exception of Fusion each game had a minimalistic plot which took a back seat as the real focus was exploring alien worlds, with the real reward being the discovery of little details or hidden items heck at times a lot of the story was told through the gameplay itself.

To cut the rant short pretty much instead of giving another game that allows us to discover and explore an alien world without being beat over the head with the story, they gave us a grand space opera that not only lacked subtly but overly relied on bringing back past enemies and ironically said plot has so much irrelevance despite it being forced on you.
Basically the only thing the story did was retroactively screw with past games and make aspects of Fusion make no sense whilst at the same time contributing nothing at all, Im even trying my hardest to not rant about screwing up Samus herself but the saddest part is this mess came from the same man who brought us Super Metroid... I guess this is what happens when he has full control.
Yeah, I got to agree with this one. The story was an atrocity. How is it for example that Samus, who although very little characterization had been done up to this point, was established to be at the very least to be a farily seasoned bounty hunter, be suddenly be breaking down and becoming this subservient little whiny *****? "Adam's words pierced my heart" What? We're talking low level fan fiction levels of bad here. Never mind that the story was shot full of holes. How is it that Adam figured he was saving Samus' life by shooting her in the back while a Metroid was hovering overhead ready to snack on a Samus sandwich? And then he gives some bullshit story about Metroids being engineered to be immune to cold and he needs to go blow up the Metroid wing to the ship with him inside. Ok, putting aside the amount of bullshit in his story, couldn't he have just shot the Metroid before going "Hey Samus, don't go in there!" instead of shooting her. What's worse is that she eats up his story without question, not even questioning why he had to shoot her to stop her going to the Metroid wing of the damn ship. ...oops sorry now I went off on a rant.
Anyway the gameplay wasn't so bad, except for the absence of health and ammo drops and that the first person missile thing didn't really work during boss fights.
Yeah the gameplay was decent but flawed. It was more the extreme linearity that annoyed people.

On note of the story yeah absolute train wreck that is so badly written it has extremely bad implications about Samus and Adam's relationship, never have a saw a character who the author clearly wants you to like become such an irredeemable douche and thats through bad writing alone. One thing that must be pointed out Sakamoto is to blame alone since there was 3 companies working on Other M and he ruled over everything with an iron fist. Team Ninja for example wanted to use wiimote and nunchuck controls to allow for more direct control and sakamoto essentially bitched at them until they agreed with him.

The infamous Ridley scene is not only a character destroying moment but just plain bad storytelling since even if you buy into the whole PTSD thing (which is a load of crap) even then the scene still fails as it serves no purpose other than to make Samus look weak (funnily enough a recurring theme in the game), since the scene requires you to understand Samus's backstory which has never been officially revealed except in a japan only Manga and a brief description on a Super Smash Bros. trophy. So the scene pretty much annoys fans and confuses newcomers.

I have rarely seen this mentioned but some of Sakamoto's comments about Samus before the game came out were down right creepy, such as the whole "Only I know where her beauty mark is" comment. It actually makes a lot of the unfortunate implications make a whole lot more sense, minor conspiracy theory moment Adam Malkovitch is Sakamoto's self insert perhaps ?
And that's not even getting into the whole theme of motherhood which, as Yahtzee put it, was woven into the narrative about as subtly as a sperm whale in an airplane luggage compartment. Why the FUCK would Samus feel such an attachment to "the baby"? It's not her baby it's just a Metroid that imprinted on her. Bearing in mind that the first thing Samus did after leaving SR388 upon discovering the infant Metroid was deliver it to a research lab so they could experiment on it. Yeah there's a devoted mother for you. Oh but all of sudden we're majorly depressed because we were unable to save "the baby."

No, I don't blame Team Ninja for Other M, I place all the blame at the feet of Sakamoto, who seems to have been taking tips from George Lucas.

This can be answered in two words. Fable 3.
...I was going to say Dragon Age 2...but that would be wrong. Fable 3 by far was the worst sequel...I could be wrong honestly since I never played Journey and...

...

Fable: The Journey could be the worst by default since it doesn't work without the Kinect. I've never played Journey because there's no way in Hell I'm bringing a Kinect into this house (it's too small for Kinect anyway) so I don't know if Journey has DLC requirements and, slowdown/ Screen-tearing as bad as that in Fable 3.

I can think of a few sequels that have disappointed me.

The most prominent ones being Fable 3 and Saints the Third, though a few others include:

Sonic '06, for existing

Red Faction: Armageddon, for it's plot (you were right there when the terraformer blew, Darius, just repair the damn thing!)

Edit: would DmC count?

Also, the second half of Condemned 2 took a massive shit all over the rest of the series.

I enjoyed both of those games immensely, which is why I was thunderstruck and irritated to find that Path of the Furon was on X-Box only. Now, Big Willy is obviouly a disappointment... The voice-actors of the games wouldn't actually touch it.
I distinctly remember playing Path of the Furon on PS3... As I don't have an Xbox and never did. Was it a timed exclusive or something?
But yeah, Big Willy was just... ugh... why?!

It's been mentioned but Dragon Age 2. Talk about your departure in style (and quality) from the original game. I was quite disappointed with it, clearly a rush job to get a sequel out and our money in their coffers as quickly as possible.

Mass Effect 3. I wish I'd done what my friends did and not bought it at all.

Also, to some extent, Assassin's Creed 4. It wasn't that it was particularly bad, but it was the first time the city wasn't that fun to run around, the first time you couldn't pick up brooms off the ground and use them as weapons, the first time attacks were all contextual (you can't just swing a fucking weapon if you're not locked on), the first time the annoying hasslers were invincible children, the first time guns were advanced enough to seem stupidly implemented, and the combat system reduced enemies to whether you have to disarm them before you kill them or not. It also felt the most linear of Assassin's Creed games I've played, and the attack triangles during combat were obnoxious. The trading system was ridiculously tedious. The best thing about it was the ship sections, which were great, but at this stage it's like "Make a game out of that, and a seperate one for Assassin's Creed". You can't judge a game by the strength of it's minigames.

Amen to that mate, taking a beloved franchise for base building and tank spamming, then remove bases and give a ridiculously low build cap. They could have only made it worse by making it a FPS :-/ Utter idiots.

Anyone else noticing the high number of EA games in here? Says something doesn't it.

Fallout 3. It's not that I didn't like the change to FPS but I didn't like how the story changed so drastically in tone. Everything felt so "tacked on" as though it had to be included because it existed. Certainly there were some very memorable moments following a giant nuke-lobbing robot but the whole premise around it was absurd for Fallout standards. On the other hand I LOVED New Vegas as I felt it was a better reflection of the setting.

I actually enjoyed Dragon Age II and Mass Effect III. Sure it could have been "more" but I wasn't disappointed in my purchase.

Ooh, SimCity deserves to be on that list. Yeah it doesn't have a number after it but DAMN did they shit the bed with that.

I'd go with Skyrim and Mass Effect 2, both are sequels to games that I thought were spectacular, and both ranged from "eh" to "I really don't want to ever touch this game ever again".

I almost feel self-concious for enjoying Dragon Age 2 and Fable 3. I thought they were really fun and I liked playing them. Dragon Age didn't really grab me but I had a blast with the sequel. As far as the Fable series, I've always enjoyed the casual feel it had, that and any game where I can create the protagonist gets bonus points with me.

As for my least favorite, the most recent thing has to be Gears of War Judgement. I felt that the narrative was very similar to Black Ops and the game itself really didn't feel that fresh to me. I suppose it's similar to the 'cashgrab' feeling that some of you have over DA2.

Wait since when there is C&C4? EA just released RA3.
[takes half a bottle of happy denial pills]
I'm pretty sure C&C4 haven't been even announced yet.

You know, Renegade2 might work, if developers makes gameplay somewhat similar to Battlezone...
[pops in remaining bottle of pills]
... after they pull Renegade2 out of the limbo that is :/

I'd say Jak X. The first three were pretty awesome platformers, but Jak X removed all the awesome and turned it into a racing game with the Jak and Daxter label tacked on. I'll admit, it was still fun, but it didn't need the Jak label.

This one's done it. I'll make my first post just to get it off my chest. While it wasn't a direct sequel to the game I had really loved, Bad Company 2 (even better than BF2 IMO), Battlefield 3 was the first time I had ever taken notice of what the industry was starting to become as a whole. I tried, but I couldn't have fun playing it. Bloom and lighting effects don't make up for poor gameplay, so I'll keep playing BC2 for years to come. It was just too boring and it wasn't uncommon to be playing Caspian Border and finish with 4 kills, 0 deaths in the tank, in first place on the scoreboard. I guess it's popular enough with the general crowd, so if they like it, that's fine, but Battlefield 3 just never clicked with me.

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War. (Main answer, here)
So, the original Deus Ex was my favourite game of all time (until about a month ago when I played The Walking Dead.)
Then I played the second Deus Ex.
Then I refused to call it a sequel to Deus Ex.
I don't even know what's up with this game. It's as though they purposefully took out everything that made the first one good, turned the bad stuff up to eleven and made the game close to windows every time you loaded an area (an actual step of the loading proccess). Only plus it had was the graphics weren't quite as bad.

The other major one is Skyrim. I really loved Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion (I'm probably going to get shot for liking that last one), but Skyrim was just meh for me. I can't quite put my finger down on why, but the world just didn't feel as well realized and I really, really don't like the way levelling works. If it had been Oblivion's system with a few skills taken out and none of that level-scaling nonsense I would've enjoyed it way more, I feel. It's by no mean bad, it's just an OK game in a series where every previous installment (Except the very first one. Screw Arena) had blown my mind.

Mass Effect 2, but not because I don't like the two later Mass Effects (In fact, I liked that series more as the number on the end increased. Sue me.), but because ME1 was a Space Opera, ME2 was a space action blockbuster. A damn good one, but more games like ME1 need to exist, and we have more than enough games like ME2.

CoD: Modern Warfare 2. I hoped the sequel to the only interesting one would also be interesting. Nope.

I don't know if you can call it a sequel, but I'm going to: The Old Republic. I want KotOR 3, damnit!

God of War 3. Somehow, having the same game with PS3 graphics didn't feel as special.

Besides, there were some serious issues with the character and the story...

Ignoring the popular options here, I'm going to take an odd direction.

KotOR II- The Sith Lords. I'm not saying it was a bad game- but I did feel very disappointed by it. You hit a certain point, and how much was left out becomes... painfully obvious. It had great potential, and I loved the first game, but the second one felt as rushed as it was- especially after I was starting to be drawn in, only to have all immersion in the world and stories pretty broken.

Again. Not saying it was bad. Just disappointing to me.

While I can understand the most popular opinions on this thread- Fable 3, ME2, DA2- personally I found enough to enjoy and keep me "in" the games to be far less disappointed than most. I can admit their flaws, don't get me wrong- but I didn't walk away with a strong feeling of disappointment in them. But that's just me. (Actually my none-gamer fiance asked me recently why Fable 3 gets so much hate, and I had to try and put all the flaws in an easily understood way. That was fun.)
