This may be memorable to anyone who's played Deus Ex.
On one level of deus ex, you had to go to a warehouse filled with friendly soldiers, go up and fiddle with a satellite dish on the roof, then go back down. Except when you fiddled with the thing on the roof, everyone went hostile.
Now, this warehouse had quite a lot of extra area that you didn't have to go to. So my usual way of dealing with the level was to scour it for everything that either exploded or released poisonous gas when agitated, and spread it evenly around the bottom floor of the warehouse (the most populous area), placed precisely such that it achieved maximum coverage.
Then go and fiddle with the satellite dish on the roof, turn the whole place hostile, and toss a LAM (grenade) over the railings down to the floor, and BOOM!, the whole ground floor was annihilated, and I had an easy stroll with maybe one or two survivors coming from side rooms.
