Definitely would have to be Penumbra.

It's all kinds of scary.
Was the turning point the first time you got clubbed to death by a naked zombie-thing?

Or the running down the hall with the flashing lights?

Fallout 3, what other game do you know where you can put a grenade in someone's pocket to blow them up?
Topped by fallout 2. Beat a kid to death with a sledge. If you don't mind the "fallout" that is.

You might not like fallout 1 and 2,because combat is tedious turnbased and less fun than mangaging an excel spreadsheet. Fallout 1/2 have excellent writing, but fallout 3 trumps it in terms of gameplay.

Batman Arkham Asylum's Scarecrow parts(especially the last one) is the first thing that comes to mind.

Psychonauts.

It's an excellent game, and had 'what the fuck' moments from the beginning till the end. Especially the last level, that was very fucking messed up.

Unfortunately, your opinion is not the be all end all. I like Fallout 1 and 2 in terms of gameplay better than 3.

The chase scenes, while awesome, were a little too bogged down with trial and error for my liking. But perhaps had I been better at them I wouldn't have had that problem so fair's fair. They're awesome regardless. Also, agreed on the mommy in the attic. Really, that whole game minus the fps ending was pretty fantastic. I really wish a good developer would explore lovecraft's work some more.

Also, did you play it on pc? If you've got a halfway solid PC check out the Penumbra series of games. I think you'd like them.
I managed to survive the chase scene on my third attempt as I recall. A good number, just enough death to make it intense and yet not enough it's become frustrating yet. Plus I just loved the ambiance throughout that game, easily among the best interpretations of Lovecrafts work to another medium yet.

And I own Penumbra actually, I just didn't mention them because they'd already been mentioned. Good games.

Since we're still on the whole 'f**ked up' topic here's another: The Fairfax House and the Children of Taronne missions in SWAT 4 were seriously messed up. One of them has you busting into a sick serial killers house where he lives in his mom's basement, and the other has you facing off against a suicidal death-cult. Both has some gruesome imagery and fantastic ambiance. Not surprising when you realize SWAT 4 was by the same people who made System Shock 2 and Bioshock.

I have to agree with killer7. That game is triiiiipy, and somehow, Suda51 tricked me into watching anime.

Hell yea, Swat 4 was a great game! The house only got creepy at the end, sorta like the cult but both missions are riddled with little bits of horror in the environment if you take the time to really soak it in.

It was the Graves in the cult mission that did it for me. It remains one of the starkest images I've seen in a game. Also, I'll be goddamned...Irrational DID do swat 4! I had no idea until now. Irrational is the best game studio ever. Three cheers for Freedom Force! And let us not forget many of their team came from Looking Glass Studios, the team responsible for the original Thief games.

That's basically like the JLA of game design in my opinion.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (total mindfuck)
and
Rule of Rose (subtle tones of pedophilia...great game though)
and
The second half of Indigo Prophecy (Farenheit in EU) (you know why if you played it)

Penumbra: Black Plague. I was there, investigating a room. Then, a naked zombie thing entered. It was quite fucked up.
Now, I really don't want to spoil how they look like, but if someone is curious then here's a picture anyway.

Mass Effect. After all, it can be "customized to sodomize whatever, whomever, however, the game player wishes". That's messed up, right?

Seriously, Postal 2 was messed up. You can burn people alive, and then piss on them to put the fire out. And, as previously mentioned, kitty-cat silencer.

Dead Space isn't all that bad.

Now Blood was a bizarre and terrifying game.
I'm glad to see Blood still has some fans. It's probably the most appropriately named game ever.
