Borderlands, HL2, and TF2 spring to mind.

Borderlands is great fun, and HL2 still plays like a dream, and is incredibly entertaining, especially the episodes. TF2 I haven't played a whole lot of, but it's a blast if you can get a good team together.

Vanquish is a third person shooter by the way.

My vote goes to Bulletstorm, the most fun I've ever had with a FPS.

Call of Duty: World at War.

The campaign and multiplayer could get quite gruelling (which i enjoyed) but the Zombies mode is the most fun i've had with a first person shooter. Especially on the Der Riese and Shi No Numa DLC maps.

To be honest, HL2 has nothing to do with FPS games from this generation. This generation is driven by stupid mechanics (regen. health, 2 weapon system, wallhugging) while HL2 still embraced everything that was great about FPS games from that time.
Good point, but those elements aren't all bad.
They just need to be used better.
Regenerating health works in Halo, and cover-based combat does make for more of a challenge if implemented properly.

Ohhhh man did I love this game.
I never owned it, but whenever I borrowed it or rented it, my dad and I would play so much co-op zombies.
I'd actually kind of like to get Black Ops because it's by the same team.

What if we find story and immersion fun? Huh?

On that note... Bioshock, Half Life 2 Episode 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Honourable mentions go to Left 4 Dead and Bulletstorm.

Don't want to knit pick, but Fallout 3 definitely can't count as FPS, because FO3 was all about using VATS.

OT: Hmm... I'm gonna have to agree with the guy who said Bulletstorm.

It was amazing.

Black Ops. I've gotten into the twitch shooting of it, and even though I'm utterly terrible at it, I look forward to Modern Warfare 3's Support Pointstreak to help me out in that regard.

First, define "this generation".

Second, define FPS. Is Human Revolutions a FPS? What about New Vegas? Can we really compare those games to, say, Serious Sam?

Unless you use one of the numerous mods that adds ironsights or exchanges VATS for bullettime.

Duke Nukem Forever. It had very satisfying combat, with fun guns to use (the pistol is actually useful!), and some cool levels to play in, like the missions where you've been shrunk.

This x1000. I played that entire game with a big, goofy grin on my face.
Thirded. Trishka and Ishi just make the game even better. The line from Grayson which went something like "Ishi was great, but he wasn't 50 foot tall and wielding a arm cannon..... I named him wally T. tackleton." Or something like that, I haven't played the game in awhile, so that quote is probably wrong.

And there's nothing more satisfying that kicking a dude in the nuts with the boot of doom..... except firing a massive drill into his nuts first, nailing him to a wall, by his nuts, then kicking him the nuts.
