the 'most hardest' game i played was Ghostbusters on the NES. Though that might be cause I was like 8.
Too many of the old spectrum games were arcade ports that used to delight in killing you because it made you put in more credits, a dumb thing to carry over to home computers...
So any of a bunch of those.
Though The Wild Bunch, a weird semi-text adventure on the spectrum was insanely hard but I adored it. Never managed to clear my name for the murder I was framed up for in it but I loved trying over and over.

Double Dragon 3. I've only gotten past the first level once, and I'm fully capable of beating the previous game reliably. It beats out Battletoads.
As for recent games, Devil May Cry 3 (and it was a good soul-wrenching difficulty.) But most recent games aren't designed with a philosophy of "We hate the player" unlike the NES's.

But seriously? Golden Sun 2, I couldn't beat the last boss. The only game I didn't finish due to difficulty.

Battletoads on SNES. I just couldn't beat the stupid game, you do one thing wrong and you have to start all over again. I almost beat the last level, atleast I think it was the last level!
Warcraft 3, The Frozen Throne was bloody hard! I think I spent atleast 10 - 20 hours on each level, thats another game where you do one thing wrong you have to start all over again but atleast I can save the game when I am doing well.
