Super Ghouls And Goblins.

It collects dust now.
Yeah, that game is notorious for being really hard. I've also found most of the side-scrolling Mega Man games to be really hard. I may never beat Mega Man 9 but I keep playing it from time to time. Also the Ninja Gaiden games (except for the reasonably challenging but not insanely hard DS version) are really tough. I can't beat some of those bosses to save my life

I wanna be the guy on PC,

and, I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet: Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus on PS1. I couldn't even beat it with invincibility on! (For a while anyway)

One game I feel is impossible is L4D on expert. The farthest I've ever gotten in any of the campaigns was about halfway on the second level. Once there I'm left only wondering what's beyond that fabled realm.

Ninja Gaiden 1. it's harder than NG2, because with NG2, i at least made it to the final boos. with NG1 i only just barely, by the skin-of-my-teeth made it to the horrible be-tentacled squishy demon-fiend thing. i promptly get raped

While it is a challenge for me to think of the absolute hardest game I have ever played I can tell u that games of today are nothing when compared to yesteryear. Most of today's games aren't really HARD, Just LONG ... The real challenges were on the NES. Ninja Gaiden, Punchout, TMNT and of coarse Contra. I suppose most of these games were hard because of the fact u couldn't save but I miss the challenge.

Either Super Mario Bros or Ninja Gaiden or "Go 2 weeks without jacking off"

On a twist of the topic, World of Warcraft is probably one of the harder games to keep on top of. Requires a full time commitment, if you want to be 'pro' at it.

Iridion 3d. Not only was it absurdly difficult, it was also boring as hell. When I have to try the first level 12 times before I get halfway through it on the easiest difficulty, there's something wrong. It's the only game I ever destroyed.

The... *snicker* most hardest game for me was Battletoads. Couldn't beat it then, can't beat it now. Unless I use the quick save / load function of emulators. Even then... still hard.

F-Zero GX and Megaman: Network Transmission.

F-Zero story mode is ridiculous, and was even the recipient of the "Harder than College" award in the Nintendo Power Awards of that year. The strategy guide states: "If you can beat this final level on Very Hard, build yourself a replica of Captain Falcon's helmet and wear to your next social gathering to impress your friends.

Megaman: NT is god damn impossible. You get battle chips to use, but they're limited, you have quite a wait to get more. Your normal blaster takes an absurd number of shots just to defeat the weakest enemies. And you're expected to have more than amazing reflexes. There's a split-second difference between safety and the vanishing of half your life bar.

Off hand, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES was the hardest game that I consistently played as a kid. I played it countless times and never got close to beating it.

Also, your grammar is appalling. I daresay it is the most appallingest grammar I have ever seen.

it's a tie between

Devil may cry 4 on hell and hell mode (basically even the weakest enemies become tricky and just slow enough so your eyes can keep up .. also with defence and hp so vamped that even ones that are meant to die in 1 hit take a good few minutes to kill ... did i mention you die in 1 hit no matter how weak the blow)

MGS4 guns of the patriots on the boss extreme mode (basically ultra realistic mode ... guns kill you as fast as they would in real life and unless you move like a turtle the enemies will hear your foot steps and the noise your gear makes .. even reloading unless theres enough background noise to cover the sound of your movements .. and thats just the normal enemies .. watch when u get to the bio enhanced ones with super hearing and vision .. also your shortage on ammo and stuff in this mode is just depressing .. also you can get 1 hit headshotted)
