It went something like this:
A-"You play warhammer? You must lead a sad pathetic friendless life"
B-"Yeah... because you play warhammer by yourself... You don't... you know... go over to a 'Friends' house to play with 'Friends' or anything..."
A-"Wait... it's single player"
B-"No you complete cretin. It's probably one of the most social games ever made."
A-"Oh..."
This is very true unless you're playing Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War.

In that event, I have one simple rule...If you disturb me you shall BURN IN THE NAME OF THE EMPEROR.

ugh... all the time...

I hear this statement too often- "Halo ODST takes place after Master Chief is dead"

Rarrgh!

as an avid halo fan, I feel it is my duty to correct them in this. Because of my obsession with correcting brain-dead issues, I find myself with a near constant headache on the subject when it is brought up.

My dad once blamed what he called 'the death of common sense' on people playing more video games.
He said something like this; 'Kids are spending too much time on their Playstations or Xboxes. I heard somewhere that the average is about 30 to 40 hours a week. They aren't going to learn how to look after themselves or anything useful playing those things'.

That's all I can think of really...
I can't think of anyone who plays games that much, 40 hours, comon I have to go to work and do that many hours, I love games but I could not play that much time, unless I was on Holidays from work, which I currently am and I did play 30 hours of Assassins Creed 2 this week and finished it 100% trophies, time to use my 7 day return policy and get my money back, lol

Just general things that piss me off about game haters, "Games are for losers and children" "Why dont you learn a real instrument instead of playing that stupid guitar game"
And my mum always complaining games are too gory, I played the GoW demo yesterday, FREAKING EPIC! and she just saw me pick up Helios and rip his head off, and she said "OMG thats horrific, how can you enjoy that" I just laughed
She also hates when games say the MF word, so she hates it when I play Saints Row 2 cuz thats all they say in that game

"Console gaming sucks" -- Ok, funny that PC gaming is such a minority that without consoles, it probably wouldn't get that many titles.
I'm sorry but that ones going straight up there, you think that there are more games developed for all the consoles combined annually than there are for PCs? Because reality disagrees. I love my consoles (well, other than the xbox 360, that's in the naughty corner for melting a solder right now), but there are far, far more exclusive PC games than console games. Hell, there have probably been more PC exclusives produced in the past month than current gen console games. One can speculate that without consoles there would be less massive budget PC games released, but then again without the console market the game devs would have to develop for something, so it's equally sensible to propose that there would be just as many, if not more, high budget PC games (actual games too, not xbox 360 ports with a .exe tacked on).
I'm not so much discussing the number of "titles" because the PC naturally lends itself to a lot of low-cost development of simplistic games. Namely because there's no Microsoft or Sony to please and acquire development/distribution licenses from.

But when we're talking *big* titles, the PC has but a precious few outside of a few genres still entrenched on the PC (RTS, I'm looking at you!).
When you think about it, almost all the popular games are on the console too - where the developers get most of their money.
(Examples: Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Bioshock 1&2, Fable II, Fallout 3, CoD 4/5/6, Battlefield BC/BC2, Left 4 Dead, Half-Life 2/Team Fortress 2)

Numerous development firms have admitted that while the games also arrive for PC, the real money is in the console releases without which, it's hard to see how game developers could survive.
The only great exception to this is, not surprisingly, the MMORPG genre which is huge in its own right and almost exclusively situated on the PC.

As it is, between the extra pain of developing for various hardware setups on PC's, the rampant piracy as well as the problem of a lowest common denominator for hardware makes it hard to see how PC gaming should be profitable, especially when console gamers seem more accepting when asked to pay for on-line gaming, which could easily turn into a huge profit (Xbox Live).

Ars Technica has a nice article up on how DeLL cut their XPS line because the market just weren't profitable. (That is, XPS desktops are meant as high-end gaming workstations).
I'm not going to argue against enthusiasts building their own system, but look at the graph in the article detailing the decline of the PC market followed by the huge rise of the consoles.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2008/05/dell-xps-phase-out-symptomatic-of-declining-pc-gaming-sector.ars

There's a joke/rumor around the 'net that John Carmack (of ID software) was once asked why ID bothered porting their PC games to Linux seeing as the market was so small that it couldn't be profitable to which he allegedly replied "because Linux gives me a woody".

In my view, that seems to be the driving force behind PC publications still. It seems that developers publish games that could run and sell well exclusively on the consoles for that very same reason - love of a platform on which they grew up and where they first cut their teeth as programmers and game developers.

But do not under any circumstances fool yourself into thinking the PC market alone is profitable for the big and costly titles.
And yet a single FPS title, crysis, proves that it is, or I could of course built on it and bring up valve. It's also worthwhile to realise that while consoles tend to be more profitable than PCs, this doesn't default PC gaming to unprofitable. It's also fairly likely that if gamers weren't buying games on consoles (which have numerous advantages and disadvantages over PCs) a great many of them would likely be buying them on PCs.

Those statistics claiming PC sales are declining are, unfortunately, false. While it is true that boxed game sales on the PC are plummeting proportionally to the rising sales of console titles. I suppose piracy, but like I am constantly reminding people, just because console piracy is less rampant on the internet doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Visit any local open air market and you'll see just how serious of a business it is.. Back on topic, it's also true that causation and correlation are far from being the same thing. The reduced number of boxed sales is far more likely being reduced due to the staggering (and often hard to measure and therefore not taken into account with these statistics) growth of online video game purchases. In essence, all these statistics on video-game sales (and console piracy) are nothing more than pure speculation on the part of those (for reasons unknown) trying to justify why they make the most profitable decisions.

Ultimately, the biggest, most irrefutable argument against video games on the PC being unprofitable is the huge number of games that are ported to the PC. Do you think for a second that companies like Activision or EA would port games like call of duty 12 and need for speed Hot burnout 3 to the PC if they weren't?

"How can this game not be good? Nintendo made it."

Naw, I'm just being cheeky. Or, at least that would be the case if someone hadn't actually said that to me... About Sonic the Hedgehog 2k6.

It's so brainless on so many levels.

That todays video games and cartoons cause violence. That one always bugs me since at least todays media shows consequences. Old thymey cartoons have loads of violence where everyone is just fine in the end. (If I hit someone with an enormous mallet lets see if everythings fine later.)

I only realy hang out with gamers and my parents never cared about my gaming, actualy they have started playing more often. My dad used to say that they will rot my brain but he jokes about it now, I got him hooked on tower defence games (Plants vs Zombies was pure gold for him) and my mom hooked on item searches.

my sister has probably been the most ignorant but she learns quickly.
Me and my friend are playing halo, he uses a plasma grenade and sends my body flying across the room
Her: THATS VIOLENT!
my friend: says nothing but walks over to the body and teabags it as a response to her statement.
Me: Yes it is violent, thats why its rated mature. <runs over old body and friend, still teabagging>
Her: Oh

My younger sister comes down to my basement lair.
her: What are you playing
me: Oblivion
her: Why did you kill that woman!?
me: because she was a bandit and im not sexist.
her: oh

This year
Im playing Call of Duty MW2
her: Hey thats Call of Duty!
me: yes it is (Fully expecting her to complain about the mission i was on: No Russan)
her: Can we play Nazi Zombies?
me:
her: you know the game where---
me: I know what you meant but i didnt know if you knew what you just said.
her: Oh yea, I love Nazi Zombies
me: well thats CoD World at War this is MW2 so no Nazi Zombies
her: Awww, that sucks can we play Halo 3?
me: I left that at college
her: Aww, come on man, you didnt bring any fun ones?
Unknown to me while i was at college she became addicted to CoD:WaW while at her friends house.
Now whenever I go home and play games she wants to play them with me. Im thinking of letting her play Mass Effect 2 when I go home over the summer since she seems to like Sci-Fic and Fantasy games.

The conversion is almost complete [sub]hehehehehe[/sub]

My dad told me one day "Those things will rot your brain." He then proceeded to play 3 hours of Zork! on the computer.

Also, it's not stupid in the same sense, but my friend talks in his sleep and one night while camping he said "...and peach was there, and kirby, and it was kinda kinky..."

"Video Games are for fat guys living in their mother's basements"
"People who play videogames are the one's who became criminals" (Post hoc ergo propter hoc)
People are such idiots, so much to the point I have made a motto, "I will always and consistently be surprised by the stupidity and ignorance of the world."
Unfortunately that is shown correct time and time again. The reason I like this website is because it is one of the few places I can have or read intelligent conversations with people who share a common interest with me, and where the homophobic overly self conscious gamers that I always find in CoD and Halo are looked down upon for giving negative stereotypes on gamers overall. This website is one of my few beacons of hope for the world.

EDIT: Anyone else notice that not only are most of these ignorant statements about gaming are not only ignorant but hyprocritical too?

i think the whole 'Resident evil 5 is racist so i wont play it' scenario is pretty bad but has some logic. however, i heard someone say that they had a friend who would disown them if they played it. it may have been something i heard on here but i could be wrong. you may disagree but when put into context and you realise that it is juat a game it does seem pretty ignorant.

I was playing Uno on Xbox live with my webcam hooked up but I didn't really want to show my face so I wore a hockey mask and I join a game with two guys and a girl. White guys, latino girl. They went on about how I was a freak and a loser for playing Uno. (the game THEY were playing also) And how I was probably a virgin and whatnot. It was quite annoy.

But all and all I just figured they were trying to entertain themselves so whatever.
