gunpowder, guns, nukes, FLIGHT!. all of those have had enormous ramifications, not just in war. but they did make a huge difference in war, which means a huge difference in everything else.

While I dislike trying to point at historical event sand say "That one! That was more important than the others," there are a few I could point out.
The Punic Wars. The conflicts between Rome and Carthage over who should rule the Meditteranean. Without these wars Rome could very well never have become the giant imperial power it was, and Europe be uprooted from its Roman and Greek cultural heritage.
World War 1. The snapping point that created all the totalitarian regimes we know and hate. Fascism, communism - if we're not still dealing with these ideologies then we still feel the effects. It also hurried the disintegration of empire, which though a good thing in the sense that it gave foreign people their own countries, also led to a lot of failed states since nothing yet resembling a stable government had had time to form.

I'm going to have to go with slavery, partially to break the mould (and bear in mind I'm saying important, not good), would past and modern day superpowers and the world we live in and it's wonders even exist without it? Take whichever one you wish, many civilisations were built upon it.

The discovery of corn.
Indeed the movement of people from hunter-gatherer roving bands to village dwelling farmers can also be seen as the birth of science, welfare that extended past your own family and medicene.
Also the (can't remmeber the correct term for this), moment where the human brain became caperble of thought beyond sight, thought of the cow that could be there rather than this cow (that IS there) - the birth of cave paintings :p

I don't really think you can select one historical event as the most important, as there are many historical events that have changed the world to what it is now.

the splitting of the atom and its use as nuclear weapons. for the first time in history a small handfull of people can wipe most life on earth in 20 minuts or so.

a close second for me is the founding of 2 of the major religions. islam and Christianity. both of these religions shape our world today like nothing else has ever been able to do (for good and bad)

My birth and the day that the Xbox 360 was released.

Don't talk anything I just said seriously! Both are jokes.

I'd say WW2 was pretty important in the sense that it was needed to shape society into what it currently is, even though whether that's good is seriously debatable. I'm guessing the truely most important event would be Darwin coming up with his theory of evolution, because it seems to be the starting point of the scientific research as to how life came into being.
